As they <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/APStylebook\/statuses\/192241618592595969\">tweeted<\/a>,  \u201cWe now support the modern usage of hopefully: It&#8217;s hoped, we hope.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>(Previously, the accepted definition was, \u201cIn a hopeful manner.\u201d) <\/p>\n<p>As the AP deputy standards editor David Minthorn told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/aps-approval-of-hopefully-symbolizes-larger-debate-over-language\/2012\/04\/17\/gIQAti4zOT_story.html?wpisrc=nl_headlines\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> somewhat mournfully, \u201cWe batted this around, as we do a lot of things, and it just seemed like a logical thing to change. We\u2019re realists over at the AP. You just can\u2019t fight it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the decision has been controversial.  While some have heralded the AP\u2019s flexibility, others, like editor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prdaily.com\/Main\/Articles\/AP_style_change_You_can_now_start_a_sentence_with_11411.aspx\">Rob Rheinalda<\/a>, take a dimmer view, opining, \u201cIt\u2019s lazy and it\u2019s subjective. The speaker presumes that everyone shares that hope.\u201d The WaPo piece had generated 680 comments as of this writing. Is Rome burning? Or is language simply in perpetual flux? <\/p>\n<p>We are reminded here of the immortal words of Ken Kesey, who, in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/1830\/the-art-of-fiction-no-136-ken-kesey\"> his <em>Paris Review<\/em> interview<\/a>, remarked,   \u201cAs you get older and hopefully wiser, you find that blame and punishment beget only more blame and punishment.\u201d Amen. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Linguists and grammarians the world over may weep into their Manuals of Style, but the march of progress continues: as of this week, the AP Stylebook has altered its definition of hopefully.
