Am curious about comfy food places where the management smiles kindly (or just not unkindly) on quiet, unassuming customers who occupy space for many hours, ordering only coffee, or perhaps (eventually) some delicious pie &#8230; Suggestions? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Sincerely, Ex Libris<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> (oh and Manhattan only please)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dear Ex, We have one of the world\u2019s great reading rooms\u2013at least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/164881\/upheaval-new-york-public-library?page=0,0\">for now<\/a>\u2013at the Forty-second Street Library. Having spent years in tiny, often overcrowded apartments, I promise that you will sit longer and read more there than in any caf\u00e9. If you get hungry, there\u2019s a Pret \u00e0 Manger across the street, not to mention the restaurant and sandwich kiosks in Bryant Park. Enjoy it while you can. Other good reading places\u2014on weekdays especially\u2014are the side room at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cafepickmeupnyc\">Cafe Pick Me Up<\/a> on Avenue A, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/2011\/04\/11\/hungarian-pastry-shop-ready-celebrate-50th-anniversary\">Hungarian Pastry Shop<\/a> in Morningside Heights, and <a href=\"http:\/\/taralluccievino.net\/\">Tarralucci e Vino<\/a>, either the one off Union Square or the one on East Tenth Street. For weekends, I highly recommend the bar at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vandaagnyc.com\/\">Vandaag<\/a> on Second Avenue. No pies, but excellent coffee, strupwafels, and poached eggs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Hi, Paris Review,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m intending to have a reading group over the summer. If I selected<\/em> War and Peace <em>by Leo Tolstoy<\/em>, Middlemarch <em>by George Eliot<\/em>, JR <em>by William Gaddis, and<\/em> Ulysses <em>by James Joyce, would their heads explode? If not, what order do you recommend? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em> Heads may not actually explode, but mine is starting to ache! (<em>JR<\/em> \u2026 oof.) Any one of those could take your group all summer. If you want a challenge, I suggest the first two\u2014with something short and sweet in between, by way of a palate cleanser. Maybe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uncle_Vanya\"><em>Uncle Vanya<\/em><\/a>, with a screening of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vandaagnyc.com\/\">Vanya on 42nd Street<\/a><\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><em>Dear<\/em> Paris Review,<\/p>\n<p><em>I am moving to London in a few months and am hoping to prep myself through literature. Can you recommend any good London books, written by Londoners or filled with characters romping through the city with love or hate or an unclear mix of the two? (Note: I\u2019m a fan of life\u2019s seedy underbellies, so something along those lines would be well-received.) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Faithfully, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>FXH<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You have an embarrassment of riches to choose from. What John Lanchester calls the \u201cbig fat London novel\u201d is a constant in English fiction. Where to begin? Patrick Hamilton\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/68-9783518458624-1\"><em>Hangover Square<\/em><\/a> or<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/books\/imprints\/classics\/the-slaves-of-solitude\/\"><em> The Slaves of Solitude<\/em><\/a>? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/17-9780375703867-31\"><em>White Teeth<\/em><\/a>? <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.strandbooks.com\/fiction\/brick%2Dlane%2D3\/_\/searchString\/brick%20lane\">Brick Lane<\/a><\/em>?<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780679730347\"> London Fields<\/a><\/em>? Lanchester just published one of his own, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780393082074\"><em>Capital<\/em><\/a>, if you want up-to-the-minute.
