It seems he \u201creplaced the legs of his armchair with \u2018cast-iron bed legs mounted on casters\u2019 so that he could glide freely throughout his office.\u201d He\u2019s known to have taken daily walks along his \u201cthinking path.\u201d Could it be that the chair\u2019s motion likewise aided him in formulating the theory of natural selection? <strong>\u2014Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been on an Apollinaire kick, starting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/indie-store-finder\">Francis Steegmuller\u2019s chatty 1963 biography<\/a>, plus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781905422920\">the new translation<\/a> of Apollinaire\u2019s love letters from the trenches and Louis Zukofsky\u2019s strange bilingual homage, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upne.com\/0819566195.html\">Le Style Apollinaire<\/a><\/em>.<strong> \u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bible is, for the first time, being translated into Jamaican patois. It\u2019s a move welcomed by those Jamaicans who want their mother tongue enshrined as the national language,\u201d reported the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-16285462\" target=\"_blank\">BBC in December<\/a>. Led by the Bible Society of the West Indies, the translation initiative began with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KinU5XjGmOE\" target=\"_blank\">the Gospel of Luke<\/a> and is scheduled for completion in August of this year. The patois translation has many\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mJKYgiR1FcA\" target=\"_blank\">excited followers<\/a>, including me, and, though I can&#8217;t understand a word, I\u2019m moved by a truth revealed at the heart of this effort: that language shapes and solidifies a people\u2019s identity and sense of belonging. It\u2019s kind of as real as it gets. <strong>\u2014Elizabeth Nelson<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s one thing I want to make clear right off: my baby was a virgin the day she met Errol Flynn.\u201d I\u2019ve been wanting to read 1961\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Big_Love\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Big_Love\">The Big Love <\/a> <\/em>(Mrs. Florence Aadland as told to Tedd Thomey) ever since I saw Patricia Marx recommend it years ago. You can imagine my delight when I opened my mailbox to find my copy, and I devoured the story\u2014a bizarre tell-all by the mother of the fifteen-year-old who had an affair with the middle-aged actor\u2014within a day. Even to connoisseurs of the lurid, this is jaw-dropping stuff:\u00a0\u201cWhen the time came she told me everything she did with Errol Flynn \u2026 Everything. And in detail, because she and I love details and get a kick out of sharing things like that.\u201d (It\u2019s all like that.) After Flynn\u2019s death, the liaison came to light, and Mrs. Aadland, convicted of contributing to the corruption of a minor, lost custody of seventeen-year-old Beverly. But she regrets nothing; the tone is as resolutely defiant as it is inappropriate.
