{"id":2987,"date":"2010-07-23T11:52:26","date_gmt":"2010-07-23T15:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=2987"},"modified":"2019-01-14T16:54:41","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T21:54:41","slug":"staff-picks-harvey-pekar-henry-luce-lost-critics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/07\/23\/staff-picks-harvey-pekar-henry-luce-lost-critics\/","title":{"rendered":"Staff Picks: Harvey Pekar, Henry Luce, Lost Critics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>What we\u2019ve been reading this week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I was keen to catch a glimpse of what is being called the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/22\/some-last-bits-of-splendor-with-harvey-pekar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last comic<\/a>\u201d of Harvey Pekar, which is a collaboration with Tara Seibel, a Cleveland cartoonist and graphic designer. Seibel\u2019s story of her final moment with Pekar is comforting in its ordinariness: she dropped him off at the public library, where he had parked his car. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Jackson Lears\u2019 marvelous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/article\/books-and-arts\/75622\/the-gospel-according-luce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review<\/a> of Alan Brinkley\u2019s less-marvelous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B008W39328\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B008W39328&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dual biography<\/a> of Henry Luce and Time, Inc. The book has been a strange mirror for reviewers: when <em>The New Yorker<\/em> handled the book, it did so as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/arts\/critics\/atlarge\/2010\/04\/19\/100419crat_atlarge_lepore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shadow portrait of Eustace Tilley<\/a>; when <em>The New York Times<\/em> did, it became a book about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/25\/books\/review\/Keller-t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenges facing newspapermen in the digital era<\/a>. But Lears sees something bigger than himself reflected in the story of Luce and his mid-century behemoth. \u201cFew men have more fully embodied the tense alliance between the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,\u201d he writes. \u201cHe preached a civil religion for an emerging affluent society.\u201d \u2014<strong>David Wallace-Wells<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s douche bag, not douchebag, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theawl.com\/2010\/07\/what-its-really-like-to-be-a-copy-editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to a former <em>New York Magazine<\/em> copy editor. But my favorite testimony from the trenches is still <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redroom.com\/blog\/andyross\/copy-editing-the-new-yorker-magazine-an-interview-with-mary-norris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Q&amp;A with <em>The New Yorker<\/em>&#8216;s Mary Norris<\/a>. Some tidbits: she will always regret making Oliver Sacks spell sulfur the American way (instead of sulpher); there\u2019s a staff writer who consistently spells annihilate with one \u201cn\u201d; and even the best are confused by the difference between \u201clie\u201d and \u201clay.\u201d \u2014<strong>T. L.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Also, the ever-serious Jeffrey Rosen on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/25\/magazine\/25privacy-t2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punishing frivolity<\/a> of life on the Internet; theologian David B. Hart on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigquestionsonline.com\/features\/in-self-defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theologician Marilynne Robinson<\/a>; and a charming <em>Esquire<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esquire.com\/features\/impossible\/price-is-right-perfect-bid-0810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feature<\/a> on gamesmanship and <em>The Price Is Right<\/em>. \u2014<strong>D. W. W. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>For my sins I&#8217;ve been reading Seymour Krim\u2019s 1970 collection <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0850310474\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0850310474&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Shake it for the World<\/em><\/a>. Krim was what used to be called an \u201cunderground\u201d critic. He wrote for the <em>Voice<\/em> and the <em>New American Review<\/em>; I read him to remember how dead that world is now. Half this collection is a sustained rant against James Jones and Norman Mailer (\u201c&#8230; now this hip young literary snatch was carrying on about <em>Barbary Shore<\/em> in a way that would have offended Mailer himself. I lost my trick of the evening because of the stone I turned to after this Mailer-infected preacherette thrust him at me like the sacrament . . . \u201d etc., etc., etc.) Nowadays I suppose he&#8217;d be a blogger, like the rest of us. Every once in a while, though, Krim gets off a zinger. For instance when the <em>New Yorker<\/em> theater critic John McCarten calls <em>Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf<\/em> \u201ca vulgar mishmash.\u201d Writes Krim: \u201cWhat Irishman is kidding what Jew?\u201d One misses that kind of thing, a little. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What we\u2019ve been reading this week. &nbsp; I was keen to catch a glimpse of what is being called the \u201clast comic\u201d of Harvey Pekar, which is a collaboration with Tara Seibel, a Cleveland cartoonist and graphic designer.
