And I&#8217;m fucking depressed. Like wow, what a downer. Give me something to cheer me up.<\/em> \u2014Jeff Swift<\/p>\n<p>Like, you can&#8217;t get out of bed? Get someone to bring you the Jeeves novels of <a href=\"http:\/\/theparisreview.org\/viewinterview.php\/prmMID\/3773\">P.G. Wodehouse<\/a>. They are extra-strength heartening. Emergency use only. For a mild case of the blues, may I suggest either of Sam Lipsyte&#8217;s last two novels, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Home-Land-Novel-Sam-Lipsyte\/dp\/0312424183\/\">Home Land<\/a><\/em> or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ask-Novel-Sam-Lipsyte\/dp\/0374298912\/\">The Ask<\/a><\/em>? Some reviewers call them depressing, but they&#8217;re not. They master depression. And they take place on Yatesian territory\u2014the suburbs of failure. Yet they are full of Olympian laughter. Some people swear by Laurie Colwin. Try <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Happy-All-Time-Vintage-Contemporaries\/dp\/0307474402\/\">Happy All the Time<\/a><\/em>. Or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Consenting-Adults-Duchess-Will-Furious\/dp\/0140058338\/\">Consenting Adults<\/a><\/em>, by Peter de Vries. If nothing else works . . . I&#8217;m not sure how to recommend this, but are you familiar with <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Am-Bunny-Golden-Sturdy-Book\/dp\/0375827781\/\">I Am a Bunny<\/a><\/em>? I have come <em>this<\/em> close to stealing that book from two separate babies, during two different dark nights of the soul.
