I haven\u2019t really looked at the magazine since childhood, and with the very first issue I received a couple months ago, I couldn\u2019t believe I\u2019d been away so long. <em>NatGeo<\/em>\u2019s known for its photography for a reason: the imagery in these stunning, often unearthly shots seems tangible. My favorite so far is<a href=\"http:\/\/ngm.nationalgeographic.com\/2012\/04\/african-masks\/galembo-photography#\/01-water-buffalo-spirit-figurehead-670.jpg\"> a portfolio by Phyllis Galembo <\/a>of African and Haitian ritual costumes<\/a>. These are a long way from your typical African masks. \u201cJust putting one on,\u201d says one art historian, \u201cis a charged event.\u201d \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the most wonderful time of the year\u2014the NHL postseason! Grantland&#8217;s Katie Baker, making <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantland.com\/story\/_\/id\/7802060\/penguins-flyers-more-predictions-first-round-nhl-stanley-cup-playoffs\">predictions<\/a> for the opening series of the Stanley Cup playoffs, picks Tupac\u2019s \u201cHit &#8216;Em Up\u201c as the representative song for the first-round \u201chatefest\u201c between the Penguins and Flyers (which, for those unfamiliar with current hockey events, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fPgr2DwWzIk&#038;feature=player_embedded\">is a perfect fit<\/a>). \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.persephonebooks.co.uk\/pages\/titles\/index.asp?id=151\"><em>Dinners for Beginners<\/em><\/a>, written in 1937 and out now from Persephone, is \u201cfor people who know nothing about cooking. At the same time, it is intended for all those\u2014whether they can cook or not\u2014who appreciate good food and like to entertain their friends, but cannot afford to spend more than a strictly limited amount of money on housekeeping \u2026 The authors have tried to write a cookery book that EXPLAINS EVERYTHING. No knowledge is taken for granted. The beginner is not expected to know by the light of nature how to make gravy, sauces, or pastry; she is told when the lid of a saucepan or fireproof dish ought to be on when it should be off.\u201d \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nThis weekend I am checking out a new production of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brownpapertickets.com\/event\/236299\"><em>The Maids<\/em><\/a>, Jean-Paul Sartre\u2019s alleged \u201cfavorite play ever.\u201d Loosely based on the Papin sisters, French servant girls who brutally murdered their employer in 1933, <em>Maids<\/em> was penned by notorious thief-turned-playwright Jean Genet. Get a taste of the sadomasochistic weirdness in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eK_i4OtkCi0&#038;feature=related\"> this clip<\/a> from the 1974 film adaptation. Running through Sunday. \u2014<strong>Allison Bulger<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vivaldi\u2019s \u201cSpring\u201d while reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/8934778-the-clouds\"><em>The Clouds<\/em><\/a> by William Carlos Williams. An unlikely pair, I admit, but it works: Williams\u2019s images of the forever changing clouds marching across the sky, set to the whimsy and flux of Vivaldi\u2019s classic, which captures so perfectly the feeling of this season\u2014inherently a march of change. Try it. \u2014<strong>Elizabeth Nelson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nHard as it might be to choose a favorite Dick Cavett interview, I always find myself returning to his talks with movie stars and directors. From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4NiThZ8tJLI\">the rambunctious episode with Peter Falk, Ben Gazarra, and John Cassavetes<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=93HCeGy6vzk\">erudite study with Jean-Luc Godard<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e_SsccgYyvA&#038;feature=relmfu\">the relaxed reminiscences of Katharine Hepburn<\/a>, there&#8217;s never a dull moment. \u2014<strong>Josh Anderson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nThe Met\u2019s production of <em>La Traviata<\/em> is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metoperafamily.org\/metopera\/liveinhd\/LiveinHD.aspx\"> live in HD <\/a>this Saturday.
