What kind of novelist are you if women aren\u2019t reading your books?\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2012\/mar\/09\/great-american-losers\/\">Elaine Blair<\/a> on DFW, sexual humiliation, and that obscure object of desire, the woman reader. <strong>\u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been reading and rereading galleys of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Poetry-Kabbalah-Tradition-Margellos\/dp\/0300169167\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1331831207&amp;sr=8-5\">The Poetry of Kabbalah<\/a><\/em>, an anthology of Jewish mystical verse translated (and massively annotated) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/16\/peter-cole\/\">Peter Cole<\/a>. This is ambitious poetry. It combines liturgical solemnity with outrageous flights of metaphor, and Cole\u2019s versions match the originals step for step. About the Poems of the Palaces, a series of hymns from the first millennium, Cole writes that it is \u201ca poetry written for men who would become like angels, serving and praising God. It is not a poetry of \u2018personal voice\u2019 or \u2018a meter-making argument\u2019 with a \u2018self.\u2019 Rather, it is a verse rooted in the magical power of letters and words.\u201d<strong> \u2014Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was so excited when Ari Seth Cohen&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Advanced-Style-Ari-Seth-Cohen\/dp\/157687592X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1331840792&amp;sr=1-1\">Advanced Style<\/a><\/em> landed on my desk\u2014my love of the blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/tag\/ari-seth-cohen\/\">is no secret<\/a> and being able to peruse these grandes dames at my leisure is even better! <strong>\u2014Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of why some people need actual bookstores: if I hadn\u2019t seen it sitting there at the Strand, I&#8217;d never have picked up <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Babbitt-Sinclair-Lewis\/dp\/1619493039\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1331840817&amp;sr=1-1\">Babbitt<\/a><\/em>\u2014and what could be better for a bad mood on a Saturday night with a cold? <strong>\u2014L. S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are like me and springtime puts you in a whimsical, dancing mood, try <em>The Band Wagon<\/em> with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. Though I am too timid (and clumsy!) to dance like that myself, I live vicariously through their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wDHwJrbrp0Y\">twirls and sashays through Central Park<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Elizabeth Nelson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The huge, knotted automobile parts now on view in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/new-york\/exhibitions\/on-view\/john-chamberlain-choices\">John Chamberlain retrospective<\/a> at the Guggenheim each look like brushstrokes made massive, three-dimensional, and wonderfully kinetic. \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/wilderquarterly.com\/\">The Wilder Quarterly<\/a><\/em> is the perfect thing to read in these early days of spring: the Brooklyn-based magazine is a stylish paen to all things green and growing and donates part of proceeds to the Fresh Air Fund. <strong>\u2014S.
