\"\"<\/a>I am so excited to visit this Djuna Barnes exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum<\/a>: it\u2019s an\u00a0archive of her New York journalistic work between 1913 and 1919, frequently illustrated by the budding modernist herself. \u2014Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cJohn had many moving parts, exploding in as many directions as one of his sentences,\u201d writes Jen Nesselin in one of the rememberances that round out the new collection of John Leonard\u2019s writings, Reading for My Life<\/em><\/a>. \u201cBut he was, above all, an enthusiast.\u201d Those ecstatic, exhaustive, amassing\u2014enthusiastic!\u2014sentences, nestled in the pages of The New York Review of Books<\/em> or Harper\u2019s<\/em> or The New York Times<\/em>, were a delight to me for many years. I\u2019m even more delighted to have so many of them in one place. \u2014Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn <\/strong><\/p>\n

Joseph Cornell, mostly known for his shadow boxes, also made surrealist films. UbuWeb<\/a> carries some dozen of them, including the rightfully famous Rose Hobart<\/em>, the only movie to screen publicly during his lifetime\u2014it sent Salvador Dal\u00ed into fits of rage, which sent Cornell\u2019s cinema into hiding. Yet it\u2019s The Midnight Party<\/em> that really charms and disturbs. \u2014Josh Anderson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently I found myself watching a lot of Israeli cinema. I began with Or<\/em><\/a>, about a daughter struggling to support her mother and keep her out of prostitution, and moved on to Jaffa<\/em><\/a>, about a secret affair between a Jewish woman and an Arab man\u2014both brilliant films featuring the splendid Dana Ivgy. \u2014Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of all last week\u2019s tributes to the late, great Gary Carter, the one that choked me up most was an emotional Keith Hernandez<\/a>, who, back in the day, used to mock the exuberant and clean-living catcher.
