If you could recommend reading material that addresses the issue of the transitory lifestyle, it might make the journey a little easier.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re looking for seekers (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Razors-Edge-W-Somerset-Maugham\/dp\/1400034205\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503399&amp;sr=1-1\">The Razor\u2019s Edge<\/a>)<\/em>, free spirits (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Road-Penguin-Great-Books-Century\/dp\/0140283293\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503375&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>On the Road<\/em><\/a>), ramblers (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complete-Little-House-Nine-Book-Set\/dp\/0064400409\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503420&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Little House<\/em><\/a> books) or the Picaresque (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Opinions-Tristram-Shandy-Gentleman-Editions\/dp\/048645648X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503341&amp;sr=8-1\"><em>Tristram Shandy<\/em><\/a>) there\u2019s no shortage of literary traveling companions. Keep in mind that unstable, constantly-relocating parents also make for memorable childhoods, so the memoir section is rife with tales of itinerant life!<\/p>\n<p><em>What is the funniest book ever written?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t feel this is a question one person can answer definitively for all sorts of obvious reasons, although I will say NOT <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ginger-Man-J-P-Donleavy\/dp\/0802144667\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503449&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>The Ginger Man<\/em><\/a>, since all sorts of people, mostly men, are wont to go into ecstasies about its alleged hilarity. But then, lots of the reputedly uproarious classics have left me cold, so what do I know?<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need me to list the \u201cgreat comic novels\u201d for you\u2014<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tom-Jones-Oxford-Worlds-Classics\/dp\/0199536996\/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503505&amp;sr=1-3\">Tom Jones<\/a>, Tristram Shandy, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lucky-Jim-Penguin-Modern-Classics\/dp\/0141182598\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503534&amp;sr=1-1\">Lucky Jim<\/a> <\/em>\u2026 the list goes on. I feel like the \u201cright\u201d answer to this question is something like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ulysses-James-Joyce\/dp\/1613821174\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329504174&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Ulysses<\/em><\/a>, but I\u2019d be lying if I said it had me in stitches. (Although Mark Twain genuinely has.) Several in the canon get resounding plaudits from my colleagues here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Catch-22-50th-Anniversary-Joseph-Heller\/dp\/1451626657\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503559&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Catch-22<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hitchhikers-Guide-Galaxy-Douglas-Adams\/dp\/0345391802\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503588&amp;sr=1-2\"><em>The Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy<\/em><\/a> are considered comedy classics for a reason.<\/p>\n<p>Says Lorin, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tetherballs-Bougainville-Novel-Mark-Leyner\/dp\/067976349X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503667&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>The Tetherballs of Bougainvillea<\/em><\/a> made me laugh longest. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/London-Fields-Martin-Amis\/dp\/0679730346\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503702&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>London Fields<\/em><\/a> made me laugh hardest (Marmaduke: projectile tears of laughter). <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Home-Land-Novel-Sam-Lipsyte\/dp\/B001O0EHUO\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503729&amp;sr=1-1\">Home Land<\/a> <\/em>made me laugh loudest. Mark Twain\u2019s sketches and the Jeeves books make me laugh most reliably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deirdre adds that Sam Lipsyte\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ask-Novel-Sam-Lipsyte\/dp\/B004HB1CVY\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503770&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>The Ask<\/em><\/a> should not be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>As for me, I\u2019ve mentioned it before, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/After-Claude-Review-Books-Classics\/dp\/1590173635\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503801&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>After Claude<\/em><\/a> was the last book to actually make me laugh out loud. I love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Scoop-Evelyn-Waugh\/dp\/0316926108\/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503820&amp;sr=1-3\"><em>Scoop<\/em><\/a>, and early parts of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pursuit-Love-Vintage-Nancy-Mitford\/dp\/0307740811\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329512146&amp;sr=8-2\">The Pursuit of Love<\/a>. <\/em>(Although I find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Letters-Nancy-Mitford-Evelyn-Waugh\/dp\/0340638052\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503921&amp;sr=1-1\">Waugh and Mitford\u2019s correspondence<\/a> funnier than either.) E.F. Benson\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mapp-Lucia-F-Benson\/dp\/1559212322\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329504022&amp;sr=1-1\">\u201cMapp and Lucia\u201d series<\/a> has moments of absolute hilarity. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pictures-Institution-Comedy-Phoenix-Fiction\/dp\/0226393755\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503972&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Pictures from an Institution<\/em><\/a> should be in there, surely.<\/p>\n<p>Disclaimer: I find certain scenes in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Excellent-Women-Penguin-Classics-Barbara\/dp\/014310487X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329503998&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Excellent Women<\/em><\/a> genuinely funny, but Lorin said that he didn\u2019t laugh once, so.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have a question for the editors of <\/em>The Paris Review<em>? <a href=\"mailto:advice@theparisreview.org\">E-mail<\/a> us.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Because of my school\u2019s academic structure, I pack up my possessions and move every two to three months, ricocheting between school, home, and New York.
