France Gall.<\/p><\/div>\n

I\u2019ve spent several hours poking around the Web site of the Modernist Journal Project<\/a>, a wonderful archive of magazines\u2014The Egoist<\/em>, The Little Review<\/em>, The Tyro<\/em>\u2014from the heyday of modernism. It\u2019s always bracing to read Wyndham Lewis\u2019s BLASTS in their original typography, but I\u2019d never heard of Le Petit Journal des R\u00e9fus\u00e9es<\/em> (published in 1896, in San Francisco). Its single issue was printed on wallpaper cut in the shape of butterfly wings. All the poems are presented as having been written by women\u2014though in fact they\u2019re probably the work of the editor, James Marrion\u2014and rejected by more famous magazines. \u201cWe know of two copies of this journal,\u201d the site\u2019s editors write, \u201cand they are not identical.\u201d \u2014Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>I keep watching France Gall sing her 1965 hit \u201cPoup\u00e9e\u00a0de Cire, Poup\u00e9e de Son<\/a>\u201d over and over and over again. The refrain means \u201cI\u2019m a wax doll, I\u2019m a stuffed doll.\u201d It could also mean \u201cI\u2019m a doll made out of records, I\u2019m a doll made out of sound.\u201d In later life, Gall claimed that she had been too\u00a0young to understand the lyrics, by Serge Gainsbourg (or to understand the doubles entendres in another hit he wrote for her, \u201cLes Sucettes<\/a>\u201d). I love Gall\u2019s girlish dignity. Somehow the joke just isn\u2019t on her. \u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n

I watched Robert Altman\u2019s 3 Women<\/em><\/a> over the weekend and was transported\u2014by the film\u2019s gauzy surrealism and also by Sissy Spacek\u2019s preternatural woman-child. When her character Pinky uttered the line\u00a0\u201cI wonder what it\u2019s like to be twins \u2026\u00a0do you think they know which one they are?\u201d I couldn’t believe that I\u2019d also been thinking of watching Persona<\/em>. \u2014Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sarah Levine, when asked about the unlikeable narrator of her novel Treasure Island!!!<\/a>,<\/em> replied, \u201cThere is a moral center to the book\u2014and she doesn\u2019t inhabit it.\u201d But what the protagonist lacks in compassion and modesty, she makes up for in wit. I found myself smiling\u2014nay, giggling\u2014at her seemingly endless (and endlessly entertaining) capacity for egotism. \u2014Emily Cole-Kelly<\/strong><\/p>\n

I recently revisited Evelyn Waugh\u2019s controversial imperialist satire, Black Mischief<\/em><\/a>, in which the oblivious Oxford-educated emperor of an island off Africa\u2019s east coast returns home to modernize his empire and, of course, fails catastrophically. It\u2019s bitterly funny. \u2014Emma del Valle<\/strong><\/p>\n

In New York, it\u2019s sometimes hard to imagine living city life on the cheap. Anatole Broyard\u2019s remembrances of 1940s West Village bohemia in\u00a0Kafka Was the Rage<\/a> <\/em>are a wonderful corrective, portraying longings of the heart, rather than the pocketbook. \u2014Josh Anderson<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
