Click here to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/07\/14\/caitlin-roper-editor\/\">part 1<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY FOUR<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/caitlinroperphoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"348\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2649\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:30 A.M.<\/strong> John Waters interview. He\u2019s in Provincetown for the summer, so we have to talk on the phone. I\u2019m disappointed not to meet him in person, but still excited to talk. Waters is a charmer. I\u2019m instantly enthralled and <span class=\"annotation\">never want to hang up<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">1:00 P.M.<\/strong> My friend Max sent me some images of paintings by <span class=\"annotation\">Walton Ford<\/span>, whom we both admire. I think Ford is my favorite contemporary painter. He paints gigantic, detailed watercolors. There\u2019re sort of Audobon, naturalist illustration-inspired, with a dark, anti-colonial, anti-industrialist twist. I spend about fifteen minutes looking at all the Ford paintings I can find online. This is an example of a kind of culture that is not best delivered via computer screen. I long to see some Ford paintings at full size.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">4:15 P.M.<\/strong> &#8220;Puritan, Inc.,&#8221; a review of <em>Making Haste From Babylon: The Mayflower Pilgrims<\/em> and <em>Their World: A New History<\/em> on <em>TNR<\/em>\u2019s <em>The Book<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/book\/review\/puritan-inc\">written<\/a> by my friend and colleague <span class=\"annotation\">David Wallace-Wells<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">5:00 P.M.<\/strong> Max sent me <a href=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4140\/4738607791_f2e29f22fa_o.gif\">this video<\/a>, probably captured by a security camera, of a guy strolling down the street in a track suit and a pair of sunglasses. He does a double-take, and nearly gets hit by a car careening down the sidewalk. He leaps to safety, missing death by inches. I find it so alarming I watch it over and over again. The way the guy looks up, jukes to one side, then leaps expertly out of the way\u2014I cannot believe it. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/The-Kids-Are-All-Right-Poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"222\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2658\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:45 P.M.<\/strong> <em>The Kids Are All Right<\/em> at the Loews Village 7. I liked Lisa Cholodenko\u2019s <em>High Art<\/em>. I saw it in college. I know little about this one, which is my <span class=\"annotation\">ideal<\/span> movie-going scenario. As soon as the movie starts, I\u2019m <span class=\"annotation\">engaged<\/span>. This is the best movie I have seen in a theater since Joon-ho Bong\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1216496\/\"><em>Mother<\/em><\/a>. Also, Mark Ruffalo is hot.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:15 P.M.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/\">Kickstarter<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rooftopfilms.com\/\">Rooftop Films<\/a> teamed up for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/08\/movies\/08kickstarter.html?_r=3\">a film festival<\/a>. The roof in Park Slope is vast. We slink in during a film and settle in folding chairs. The film shorts are projected on a screen hung on a brick wall. It\u2019s a warm night, but there is a gentle, steady breeze. I watch two shorts and find my eyes drifting back to the horizon, where a herd of clouds makes its way across the plains of the blue-black sky. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY FIVE<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:00 A.M.<\/strong> I start writing as soon I\u2019m awake. It\u2019s a short piece about a single moment that changed my life (I was twelve, and in the backseat of my mom\u2019s car) for a friend\u2019s book proposal\u2014a compilation of personal essays. It\u2019s fun to have an assignment that is so discrete. I write, I think, I edit, I write, I edit, boom. <span class=\"annotation\">Done<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 A.M.<\/strong> Meet my friend Larry for coffee near my apartment. He takes out his laptop and shows me an awesome video from a recent writing assignment\u2014he drove a car in a <span class=\"annotation\">demolition<\/span> derby race in southern California. The <span class=\"annotation\">best footage<\/span> is from the Flip camera they mounted outside the windshield looking in at Larry behind the wheel. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/wiredmag.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"204\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2661\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:15 A.M.<\/strong> Early to brunch. I sit drinking a coffee and reading the <span class=\"annotation\">July issue<\/span> of <em>Wired<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>My friend Jeff arrives. We met because I ran a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/viewmedia.php\/prmMID\/6021\">portfolio of his photos<\/a> from Haiti in the current issue of the magazine. We had some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/15\/cite-soleil\/\">more of his Haiti photos<\/a> on the blog last month. Jeff has just returned from a trip to Juarez, where he took photos during the election, as the terrifying, bloody narco-war rages on.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:00 P.M.<\/strong> At swim practice, underwater, I start writing something in my head. The repetition and physical focus free my mind. (This works with running, too.) I barely notice the flip-turns or the passing of time until I\u2019m on the deck of the pool, exhausted and thirsty.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/de-la-soul2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2663\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:00 P.M.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bkhiphopfestival.com\/\">Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival<\/a> in DUMBO, under the Brooklyn Bridge. I arrive late, which, it turns out, is right on time. J. Period\u2019s live mix tape set begins and he immediately brings <span class=\"annotation\">Dres<\/span> from Black Sheep on stage. <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re all psyched. J. Period brings surprise guests Nice &#038; Smooth to the stage. They perform their hit \u201cHip Hop Junkies.\u201d The crowd starts bouncing, everyone knows every word of each song. There are a lot of shout-outs to Brooklyn. Pete Rock &#038; CL Smooth are up next. They perform \u201cThey Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),\u201d a favorite of mine (and everyone else in this audience), it makes me nostalgic, but it\u2019s impossible to feel anything but positive in this enthusiastic crowd. De La Soul takes the stage and starts their set with \u201cStakes is High\u201d and then \u201cSaturdays.\u201d My head explodes. De La has been a favorite group since I was <span class=\"annotation\">twelve<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY SIX<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:00 A.M.<\/strong> I don\u2019t know what I was dreaming about, but as soon as I open my eyes, I open my laptop and look for clips from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HROJflp4-EY\">What About Bob<\/a><\/em> on YouTube. I find them. I laugh. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Timescrossword-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2665\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:20 A.M.<\/strong> As I drink coffee, I work on the <em>Times<\/em> Crossword, give up, and watch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PSEYXWmEse8\">The 100 Greatest Movie Insults of All Time<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 A.M.<\/strong> After brunch I help a friend buy and install an air conditioner. In my car, I turn on the radio and I remember how much more great radio I listened to when I lived in the Rockaways and drove more often. I met a woman last month at the Bay Area NPR affiliate, KQED, who told me cities with bridges have the highest share of public-radio listeners. Makes perfect sense, except in New York City, where so many of us cross the rivers via trains in underground tunnels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/soccerspain-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2673\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:30 P.M.<\/strong> World Cup MAYHEM. I can hear the crowd at the Mexican restaurant on my corner cheering as I leave my apartment. The game hasn\u2019t started. I\u2019m rooting for Spain. Eventually I end up with friends at a bar on <span class=\"annotation\">14th Street<\/span> near 7th Avenue. The bar is next door to the Spanish National Club. When Iniesta scores his goal, the crowd in the bar goes insane, everyone is screaming and jumping up and down, chanting. We\u2019re all hugging or kissing strangers, the happy pulse of victory beats through the bar and out into the street. Once the game is over, the party rolls across 14th, blocking traffic, halting a city bus. The collective joy is infectious. I watch a normal-looking dude break into a spontaneous cartwheel down the dotted line in the middle of the street. The cops arrive. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">5:45 P.M.<\/strong> On the subway home, I pine for my headphones. I\u2019m rarely without them on the train. I consider what I\u2019d play: the latest from my favorite Cuban hip hop group, Los Aldeanos, or N<em>ext Stop\u2026 Soweto<\/em>, a compilation album I love. Maybe \u201cRescue\u201d by Echo &#038; the Bunnymen, or my all time favorite Duran Duran song, \u201cThe Chauffeur,\u201d or the new Big Boi album, or Bat for Lashes, or the Japandriods, or\u2014I am now listening to Lady Gaga leaking from the headphones of the woman next to me.   <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:20 P.M.<\/strong> Research for a book project. I\u2019m reading about murder, psychosis, and crime-scene analysis. I\u2019m distracted by coverage of the oil spill. I read (again) about the challenges facing attempts to stop the flow of the oil. I look (again) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2010\/05\/27\/us\/201005_oil-spill-photo-gallery.html\">photos<\/a> of this debacle. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/arrested_development1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"209\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2668\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:30 P.M.<\/strong> Alert, alert!\u2014levity reserves low. I watch an episode of <em>Arrested Development<\/em> from season three thanks to Netflix Watch Instantly and my beloved Roku. I still want another season of this show. Next, I watch part of an episode of <em>The State<\/em>. Then some <em>Trailer Park Boys<\/em>, the funniest thing to come out of Canada since <em>The Kids in the Hall<\/em>. But I notice I\u2019ve lost interest in watching when I realize I\u2019m wandering in and out of the living room and holding a copy of <em>New York<\/em> magazine. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:25 P.M.<\/strong> My friend <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/author\/willa%20paskin\">Willa<\/a> sent me <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5584530\/spanish-goalie-iker-casillas-gives-the-sweetest-post+game-interview-ever\">this video<\/a> of Spanish goalie Iker Casillas doing a post-game interview with his girlfriend. Incredibly sweet. I watch it again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/comicbookads.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"235\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2676\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:30 P.M.<\/strong> I spend about fifteen minutes on <a href=\"http:\/\/ffffound.com\/\">ffffound.com<\/a> and then fifteen more here at another <a href=\"http:\/\/tsutpen.blogspot.com\/\">blog<\/a>. And then I\u2019m looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/comixstuff.com\/\">old comic book ads<\/a> and then I realize I need to unplug.<\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY SEVEN<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:15 A.M.<\/strong> Willa sent me <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/entertainment\/2010\/07\/and_the_first_person_to_ever_u.html \">this post<\/a> about the first documented use of the phrase \u201crock the mic,\u201d which was not, as previously thought, in \u201cRappers Delight,\u201d but was rhymed with \u201clike white on rice\u201d by Melle Mel in 1978, at a show in Washington Heights.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:25 A.M.<\/strong> A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/07\/100708141620.htm\">cat imitating a monkey in the wild<\/a>! Strange animal stories (and <a href=\"http:\/\/ffffound.com\/image\/95f6f65b7fd45542b7fc792dd2ab0f7632177f6a\">photos<\/a>) are my favorite. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 P.M.<\/strong> Adam Kirsch, another critic I admire, on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tnr.com\/book\/review\/redrawing-boundaries\">A Short History of the Jews<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:30 P.M.<\/strong> Lance Armstrong and the Tour in the July issue of <em>Outside<\/em>. I\u2019m an editor at a literary magazine, but the magazine I\u2019ve subscribed to for the <span class=\"annotation\">longest period of time<\/span> is <em>Outside<\/em>. After the Armstrong piece, I read about cold-water distance <a href=\"http:\/\/outside.away.com\/outside\/culture\/201007\/swimmer-lewis-gordon-pugh-1.html\">swimmer Lewis Gordon Pugh<\/a>, \u201cthe Ice Bear.\u201d A-mazing. He swam at the North Pole and lost feelings in his hands and fingers for months, and, get this: \u201cIt also produced a previously unknown condition involving a urine icicle.\u201d Now that, my friends, is a pull-quote.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:25 P.M.<\/strong> My best friend Kristin has sent me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/videos\/index.jhtml?videoId=71416&#038;title=tupac-is-still-alive\">this clip<\/a> from Chapelle\u2019s Show, called \u201cTupac is Still Alive.\u201d I watch it twice. <span class=\"annotation\">I die<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 P.M.<\/strong> If I could only look at one website every night before bed: <a href=\"http:\/\/ffffound.com\/\">http:\/\/ffffound.com\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:45 P.M.<\/strong> I\u2019m disturbed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/13\/nyregion\/13geese.html?src=tptw\">four hundred geese have been gassed to death<\/a> in Prospect Park in the last few days. I run in the park all the time and I\u2019m used to seeing the geese on the lake. Couldn\u2019t some of them been relocated to an area where they aren\u2019t a risk to planes taking off? <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/heatwave35-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2680\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:00 A.M.<\/strong> It\u2019s hot and humid today. I love these photos from of a fire hydrant street scene from 1953. I also love that I have no idea what <a href=\"http:\/\/interweb3000.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/hydranten-spass-wahrend-der-hitzwelle.html\">the site says about them<\/a>. Sometimes it\u2019s such a relief to get a break from reading and comprehension. It\u2019s the last day of my culture diary, so I can\u2019t help but reflect a little about the cumulative effect of this aggregation. The diary\u2019s not complete: I\u2019m sure I forgot plenty, or didn\u2019t write it down after I read\/looked\/listened. Also, there\u2019s some redaction out of my desire to avoid being boring and repetitive. I mean, does anyone really want to know each and every article I read?
