Looked at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/JoJo%27s_Bizarre_Adventure\">JoJo\u2019s Bizarre Adventure<\/a><\/em> manga comic shown to me by my student Demetrius. It was incomprehensible. He showed me another manga about horse racing that seemed more interesting. I like the ones that break down one event\u2014a race or baseball game\u2014into a whole book or even series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12:30 P.M. <\/strong>On the subway, read <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Riddle-Traveling-Skull-Stephen-Keeler\/dp\/1932416269\">Riddle of the Traveling Skull<\/a><\/em> by Harry Stephen Keeler. I\u2019ve gotten to a good part about Suing Sophie, who sues men she meets on cruise ships\u2014men who, she claims, have proposed to her. It\u2019s great, but I fell asleep reading.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/fantasma.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-26143\" title=\"Fantasma\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/fantasma-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>12:45 P.M.<\/strong> I woke up and got off the subway to look for Christmas presents. At Urban Outfitters, observed books by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.banksy.co.uk\/\">Banksy<\/a> and books that contain the word <em>fuck<\/em> in their titles. Then I went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samflaxny.com\/index.htm\">Sam Flax<\/a>. This is a comfortable, old\u2013New York store stuffed with toys and obscure office supplies. Corpselike women with leopard-skin handbags purchased pens with feather-duster ends on them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2:15 P.M.<\/strong> I went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fantasmamagic.com\/shopping\/\">Fantasma Magic shop<\/a> on Thirty-third and Seventh to buy a magic kit for my nephew.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/smurfypants.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26157\" title=\"Smurfy pants\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/smurfypants-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The manager showed me Houdini\u2019s original handcuffs on display. Woke up reluctantly and ate a hard-boiled egg. Looked at Facebook. Eamon Espey\u2019s drawing room was profiled on the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/artistspaces.tumblr.com\/post\/14156786575\/eamonespey\">Where They Draw<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:00 A.M.<\/strong> I burned CD-Rs for my zine, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quimbys.com\/store\/4247\">Are Snakes Necessary?<\/a><\/em>, and mailed copies to interview subject J. Chastain and essay subject Daniel Pinkwater.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/keeler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-26146\" title=\"Keeler\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/keeler-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2:15 P.M. <\/strong>Graphic Novel class: Students started to trickle in with their final projects. As they added their precious minicomics to the pile, I came up with a joke. I would congratulate them and inform them cheerfully that at the end of the class we were going to pick up a can of gasoline from 7-Eleven and set all the projects on fire, as an exercise in \u201cletting go.\u201d This made them uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>We watched the 1988 documentary <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Uk3Qj9S_-9I\">Comic Book Confidential<\/a><\/em>. It  gets good when they hit the sixties. Lynda Barry is hilarious, and Jaime Hernandez charismatic, plus there\u2019s a friendly eighties Frank Miller. Bill Griffith reminds me of Christopher Walken. Afterward, I asked the students their opinions of the film. L. said, \u201cIt was too old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/choplick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26141\" title=\"choplick\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/choplick-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>7:00 P.M.<\/strong> Went to practice with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/thedrunkardswife\">The Drunkard\u2019s Wife<\/a> at their space in Long Island City. Arrived to see Matt Choplick\u2019s huge bass saxaphone, an instrument of which Dr. Seuss would approve.<\/p>\n<p>When I was nineteen, I tried out to play drums for Craig Flanagin\u2019s old band, <a href=\"http:\/\/allan.hise.org\/godco\/index.html\">God Is My Co-Pilot<\/a>. I was not a drummer and my audition was pathetic, but they were kind enough to hang out and let me play sax along to some their tunes. Fifteen years later, I am delighted to be allowed to blat along to his new band, which I enjoy and admire. There&#8217;s not enough fun, joyous, and subversive music left in New York these days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WEDNESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11:00 A.M.<\/strong> Had a dream about money falling from the sky. People who collected it were instantly attacked by others. It turned out to be a great dancehall-reggae tape!! Listened to Skeleton Warrior\/Meager Sunlight split tape, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/goodgodenergychronicles.bandcamp.com\/album\/seasons-of-nudity\">Seasons of Nudity<\/a><\/em>. Highly recommended techno weirdness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:00 P.M. <\/strong>Made pizza. Terrified about the response to the new INFOMANIACS strip, because it\u2019s so long. Instead of eight well-composed panels, it\u2019s more like twenty-six little floating rapping heads. I start to stress out that people will be annoyed I am hogging the Internet. Also there are some bad words that I am somewhat embarrassed to be using.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:17 A.M.<\/strong> Read interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcj.com\/the-tom-neely-interview\/\">Tom Neely<\/a> at The Comics Journal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12:00 P.M.<\/strong> Read <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\">Donald Trump\u2019s Wikipedia page<\/a> after seeing him diss Rosie O\u2019Donnell on Twitter. They copied tigers out of a Dover book of animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4:00 P.M.<\/strong> Rebecca talked me into going with her to the hardware store. She bought a machete. My girlfriend is a badass. She also convinced me that we should buy a Shop-Vac for our dusty home and studio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:00  P.M.<\/strong> I assembled the Shop-Vac .<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:30 P.M.<\/strong> Ted Lee from Feeding Tube records wrote to say the <a href=\"http:\/\/ambergris.bandcamp.com\/\">Ambergris<\/a> record is almost ready to be pressed and will come out in early 2012. Whoopee! Instead of trying to look Japanese, this production is in the style of an English twenties musical and feels very influenced by <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=USjzRLw_25U\">The Boy Friend<\/a><\/em> by Ken Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Idle can\u2019t really sing and is funny, but the production is somewhat Python-ized, which is okay but unnecessary. Gilbert\u2019s librettos and the way they are deployed in displays of rhyming prowess are the real point of interest. The lyrics are so complex and the rhymes so rhythmically perfect, the effect is transcendent, not unlike other ultraformal kinds of art like mandalas or arabesques. I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about rap and Gilbert and Sullivan. Also I like how much this play deals with beheading!<\/p>\n<p><strong>FRIDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7:00 A.M.<\/strong> Rebecca and I coteach a drawing and painting class at Parsons. Today, with some difficulty, we went to our last session of the semester. Judgment day! People seemed nervous as we reviewed their best work from the class.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/annalise.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/annalise-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"annalise\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26139\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p> (A painting by Annalise Olsen of her grandfather.)<\/p>\n<p>Teaching is a constant improvisational act \u2026 trying to figure out how to express something to fill an awkward silence. Unsure of what to say, you throw yourself on the mercy of your subconscious.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:45 P.M.<\/strong> The Strand is pretty crazy during the holiday season. I was looking for <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bread-Dreams-Fantasy-Modern-Europe\/dp\/0226092585\">Bread of Dreams<\/a><\/em>, a book about medieval-peasant hallucinations caused by moldy bread. They didn&#8217;t have it. No <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pantone.com\/pages\/pantone\/index.aspx\">Pantone<\/a> books either but they have a color-theory section, so I picked out one based on CMYK values.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/mice1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/mice1-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"mice1\" width=\"212\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26149\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My own book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pictureboxinc.com\/products\/973-1-800-mice\">1-800-MICE<\/a><\/em>, was on display in the comics section on a little metal stand, on sale for half the cover price. Whether this is a good or bad sign, I don\u2019t know. Regardless, I am pleased someone is offering a better deal than Amazon!<\/p>\n<p><strong>4:30 P.M.<\/strong> Ate with Rebecca at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hereswilliamsburg.com\/home\/2011\/12\/1\/open-for-business-vanessas-dumpling-house-310-bedford-avenue.html\">Vanessa\u2019s Dumpling House<\/a>. I\u2019m glad this place opened up in Williamsburg because it\u2019s cheap! Finally a rival to Oasis\u2019s $3.50 falafel deal!<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:00 P.M.<\/strong> Went home. Didn&#8217;t consume any culture. Discussed plans for our studio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:30 P.M.<\/strong> Headed to Shea Stadium show space to see Mercer West of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/quiethooves\">Quiet Hooves<\/a>, who had invited me to play during a few songs. I arrived with my saxophone, feeling like a session man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/partyparty.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/partyparty-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"partyparty\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-26151\" \/><\/a>and trying to hallucinate myself into a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RPgKwByiRIE\">Steely Dan<\/a> recording scenario in 1978. I repeat that I cannot play saxophone; I don\u2019t even know my notes. <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/the-dreebs\">The Dreebs<\/a> played\u2014a weird new NYC band that had a great screechy art-rock sound, kind of like an <a href=\"http:\/\/espdisk.com\/official\/\">ESP-Disc\u2019<\/a> band from the sixties. Later, with the help of several gin and tonics, I expressed my admiration for them in an effusive manner.<\/p>\n<p>The drawing to the left is from the moment just before I got onstage and disgraced myself with tuneless squawking, playing along with songs I couldn\u2019t remember. This incredible band consisted of three people doing scat versions of famous jazz melodies. Sometimes they scat in three-part harmony. Scat is making a comeback\u2014you can hear its resurgence in the nonsense syllablizing of Lady Gaga.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2:30 P.M.<\/strong> Received letter from Mr. Worthy Fist about erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:30 P.M.<\/strong> Finished <em>Traveling Skull<\/em>. It was the most convoluted mystery novel I have ever read. The wrap-up has nothing to do with any of the clues. Along the way there are some excellent descriptive passages of Chicago parks, trepanning, etc.!<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUNDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tiger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tiger-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"tiger\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26201\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>11:00 A.M.<\/strong> Drove to the Bronx Zoo with my friend Jed Lackritz and four other humans in a Honda Civic. It was a bright cold day. Ilya told me about working for an Internet company that had been invaded by \u201cbots\u201d during his vacation and described a server farm to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2:00 P.M. <\/strong>We saw the bird house and Tiger Mountain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:00 P.M.<\/strong> We spent a long time in the reptile house.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite animal was a pig-nosed turtle who was swimming around underwater in a seemingly happy manner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4:30 P.M<\/strong>. Ate in a Spanish restaurant with Arabian glitter-paint decorations reminiscent of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/art\/blog\/2011\/11\/jack-smith.html\">Jack Smith<\/a> movie set.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7:00 P.M.<\/strong> Back at home, I showed Jed my treasured copy of Stan Mack\u2019s <em>Real Life Funnies<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/stanmack.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/stanmack-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"stanmack\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-26200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This book is a great glimpse into the seventies. Mack\u2019s detectivelike methods for infiltrating different situations to gather dialogue are notable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10:00 P.M.<\/strong> We were all tired, but we still kept looking at Jed\u2019s photos of his new cat. He played us the Fall\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\/music\/The+Fall\/+videos\/+1-gq5Kvs18-4I\">Jingle Bell Rock<\/a>.\u201d We looked up \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/fuckyeahdanielclowes.tumblr.com\/post\/680185558\/500-followers-a-sensual-santa-for-you-all\">The Sensual Santa<\/a>\u201d by Dan Clowes to show Rebecca, who hadn\u2019t seen it. I looked up \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Jr-2eyRtV4\">O Holy Night<\/a>\u201d by Celine Dion on YouTube for inexplicable reasons.
