This is Bowen in her early, super-Georgian mode. It\u2019s like <em>The Wind in the Willows<\/em> meets <em>Mrs. Dalloway<\/em>, with IRA incursions. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week I finally had a chance to crack open the momentous, beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Portrait-Murdock-Pemberton-Sally\/dp\/0615524974\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1326987854&amp;sr=8-1\"><em>Portrait of Murdock Pemberton<\/em><\/a>. It presents sixty years of accumulated paraphernalia collected by Pemberton, the first <em>New Yorker<\/em> art critic and a founder of the Algonquin Round Table\u2014paraphernalia that turned up only recently, stored in suitcases in his family\u2019s attic. There are love letters; Freudian analyses conducted by mail; vintage art-gallery brochures; epistolary exchanges with Harold Ross, Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, and Alfred Stieglitz, among others; and of course a plethora of <em>New Yorker<\/em> columns from the early days of the magazine\u2014all spotted with charming satiric quips on the editorial process, like \u201cevery third week or so we feel the editorial complex empowering our sense of proportion and we give vent to a little sermon\u201d or \u201cto keep his luck running fair, every critic should be honest with you now and then.\u201d Indeed!\u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One day in 1923, a Panamanian civil servant with no interest in poetry returns home from work and composes a long poem that becomes a landmark of the Latin American avant-garde. Such is the premise of C\u00e9sar Aira\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Varamo-C%C3%A9sar-Aira\/dp\/0811217418\"><em>Varamo<\/em><\/a>. The rest of the novella reconstructs the events that lead up to (but fail to explain) this mysterious burst of inspiration. It\u2019s a lampoon of our need for narrative, and no one these days does metafiction like Aira. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m in the thick of ad sales this week, but I was particularly taken with <a href=\"http:\/\/streetsyoucrossed.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/1969-ads-revisited-other-venues-and.html\">this slideshow of vintage <em>Village Voice <\/em>ads<\/a>. My favorite is for a clothing line that sells, among other things, something called the \u201cCapitalist banker coat\u201d: \u201cIntrepid Gyro,\u201d the ad copy reads, \u201cwearing its scars lightly, stalks the surplus sub-world in quest of epic styles without compromise.\u201d \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am indulging my primordial self with William Golding\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Inheritors-William-Golding\/dp\/0156443791\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1326989525&amp;sr=8-1\"><em>The Inheritors<\/em><\/a>, a novel chronicling the demise of ambling Neanderthals at the hands of cruel Homo sapiens. \u2014<strong>Julian Delacruz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has spent any time in this fair city will get a good hoot out of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/mattcherette\/shit-new-yorkers-say\">Shit New Yorkers Say<\/a>.\u201d\u2014<strong>D.F.M.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Late at night I\u2019ve been savoring Elizabeth Bowen\u2019s 1929 novel, The Last September, about feckless English gentry in County Cork on the eve of civil war.
