This album is so good, it lightens my heart. I remember my favorite Gray song, his version of \u201cGive Me Little Sign.\u201d I put it on. Before I realize it, I start smiling at strangers. Q train over the Manhattan Bridge, you\u2019re beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:00 A.M.<\/strong> I\u2019ve been reading an incredible novel that we have on submission. I don\u2019t mean to be a tease, but I can\u2019t give any revealing information away. The novel is set in Alaska and it\u2019s so damn good I want everyone I know to read it. A Culture Diary blind item should probably be juicier than this. I apologize.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:30 A.M.<\/strong> My friend Aram Goudsouzian\u2019s new book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/King-Court-Basketball-Revolution-Foundation\/dp\/0520258878\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;\">King of the Court: Bill Russell and the Basketball Revolution<\/a><\/em> arrives. I actually bought it on Amazon. Aram teaches history at the University of Memphis. His last book was about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sidney-Poitier-Man-Actor-Icon\/dp\/0807828432\/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_3\">Sidney Poitier<\/a>. This man impresses me.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">5:15 P.M.<\/strong> This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/06\/health\/06real.html?_r=1\">article<\/a> on \u201cforest-bathing\u201d in the Times makes me happy. \u201cThe scientists found that being among plants produced &#8216;lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, and lower blood pressure,&#8217; among other things.\u201d But then I look out the office window and feel sad. I love each of the many plants in my apartment, but I need a forest bath.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:40 P.M.<\/strong> After a conversation about a book idea, my friend Dave recommends I read Janet Malcolm\u2019s \u201cIphigenia in Forest Hills\u201d in <em>The New Yorker<\/em>. How did I miss it? It was published at least six weeks ago, the issue is sitting in one of many stacks of reading material that accumulate in my apartment, layer after layer, like dust (except that I long to read them, not sweep them up). I <span class=\"annotation\">start the piece<\/span> online. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/edwardgorey.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"253\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2546\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:00 A.M.<\/strong> I have to read so much for work that I tend to consume a lot of visual and audio culture when I have free time. I often look at photography online. The Big Picture\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bigpicture\/\">photo essays<\/a> are often incredible and I love the visual narratives on the <a href=\"http:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/\">Lens Blog<\/a> but I also check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burnmagazine.org\/\">Burn Magazine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multimediamuse.org\/\">Multimedia Muse<\/a> when I want my web browser to transform into a window that looks out at a new view.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">1:30 A.M.<\/strong> My friend Max sent me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marcianddeth\/sets\/72157623540530883\/\">this beautiful Flickr set<\/a> of Edward Gorey\u2019s book covers. I have to look at each and every design. They blow my mind. The cover for <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marcianddeth\/4644252060\/in\/set-72157623540530883\/\">Nineteenth Century German Tales<\/a><\/em> features a huge spider on fire. I love it. I think I first fell in love with Gorey\u2019s <span class=\"annotation\">work<\/span> as a kid, after I saw his <span class=\"annotation\">enchanting title sequence<\/span> for PBS\u2019s <em>Mystery!<\/em> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B002A9MN7M.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/pointersisters1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2570\" \/><\/a><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:15 A.M.<\/strong> I wonder if my late-night habits are stranger than most people\u2019s. I often spend the hours online looking at images while I listen to records. Right now I am listening to an album I love, The Pointer Sister\u2019s <em>Energy<\/em> (1978). These ladies have it all: beauty, strength, soul, and talent. They started out singing at the Church Of God in West Oakland as kids. I\u2019m from Berkeley; is it an East Bay connection I have to the Pointers? I\u2019m not sure. Their careers took off before I was born. My first interaction with their music was probably <em>Pinball Number Count<\/em> on <em><span class=\"annotation\">Sesame Street<\/span><\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>I have already spent an hour on <a href=\"http:\/\/ffffound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ffffound.com<\/a> threading through all kinds of images, now I\u2019m looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/butdoesitfloat.com\" target=\"_blank\">butdoesitfloat.com<\/a>. I love these sites. I save my favorites in folders like: \u201cAlbinos,\u201d \u201cMichael Caine,\u201d \u201cLions &#038; Tigers,\u201d \u201cSky,\u201d \u201cApocalypse,\u201d \u201cHot or Not.\u201d How <span class=\"annotation\">weird<\/span> is that on a scale from normal to freaky? <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY TWO<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/neverletmego.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"230\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2547\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:45 A.M.<\/strong> I start my day with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kymQcM4ej3w\">new preview<\/a> for <em><span class=\"annotation\">Never Let Me Go<\/span><\/em>, the <span class=\"annotation\">Mark Romanek<\/span> film based on Ishiguro\u2019s book. Gah. My heart is broken and it\u2019s not even 7 A.M. But I\u2019m excited to see the movie. The book took me by surprise. I knew very little about it, and packed it for a beach vacation to St. John years ago. I was there for relaxation, romance and snorkeling, but it rained, and I stayed in the cabana until the last page, my face glued to the book, my eyes wide with empathic horror. I watch the <em>Never Let Me Go<\/em> trailer a second and a third time. Yup, it makes me sad each time. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:45 A.M.<\/strong> I need levity. So I am listening to the <em>WTF<\/em> with <span class=\"annotation\">Mark Maron<\/span> podcast in my iPod. He cracks me up. I like his guests, usually. The introductory gambit of this episode has not grabbed me. I consider <em>This American Life<\/em>, but it feels like too much of a commitment. Instead I listen to an episode of the Moth\u2019s unbeatable podcast, and then switch to <span class=\"annotation\">music<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Solondz1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2548\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:00 P.M.<\/strong> Screening of <em>Life During Wartime<\/em> at IFC. Ryan Werner of IFC introduces the director, Todd Solondz, and calls him peerless. <span class=\"annotation\">I agree<\/span>. <em>Welcome to the Dollhouse<\/em> is one of my favorite movies. Solondz introduces his movie. He is wearing a yellow plaid shirt. He\u2019s generous and articulate. He has an odd, high, soft voice. I listen intently, although it\u2019s hard to focus because Omar Little (Michael K. Williams) is sitting in the row behind me. I mean THE Omar. From <em>The Wire<\/em>. He is probably my all-time favorite television character. <em>Life During Wartime<\/em> opens on Williams, an uncomfortably tight shot for an uncomfortable scene. I resist looking back at him. By the end of the film, I\u2019m obsessively not-looking at Dylan Riley Snyder, the talented child star of the movie, who is sitting directly behind me. I want to turn and look at his freckly face so bad. I resist. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:15 P.M.<\/strong> Jim Woodring\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weathercraft-Frank-Comic-Jim-Woodring\/dp\/1606993402\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1279118944&#038;sr=8-1\"><em>Weathercraft<\/em><\/a>. Blessedly light on text, but heavy on heavy. I read in a slightly nauseated anxiety state, afraid of what will happen to Manhog next. This may not be my favorite Woodring, but I am unable to put the book down until the last frame.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/john-waters-role-models.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"224\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2550\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:00 A.M.<\/strong> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Role-Models-John-Waters\/dp\/0374251479\">Role Models<\/a><\/em> by John Waters. I\u2019m interviewing him for the blog, but I\u2019d read this book even if I wasn\u2019t. His chapter about convicted Manson family member Leslie Van Houten is surprising and moving. Waters\u2019s tone is conversational, so I feel like we\u2019re chatting, and he\u2019s articulate and funny. Plus, he writes about Lionel Shriver\u2019s book <em>We Need to Talk About Kevin<\/em> in a way that makes me say, \u201cYes! Exactly!\u201d Waters offers a succinct recap and explanation of what was the key moment in this book for me:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s a page-turner from the Devil\u2019s Reading List about a child all parents pray they never have. Fifteen year-old Kevin, three days before the legal age of accountability, has murdered seven of his high school classmates\u2026 The mother, Eva, \u201cexhausted with shame,\u201d desperately tried to understand not only her son\u2019s violent behavior but her own vague dislike of him\u2026 After his conviction, Eva visits Kevin in the juvenile correctional facility, but her son tells her, \u201cKeep it up if you want a gold star. But don\u2019t be dragging your ass back here on my account. Because I hate you.\u201d After a moment\u2019s hesitation, Eva replies, \u201cI often hate you, too, Kevin,\u201d and finally they have somewhere to start in rebuilding their relationship.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><h3>DAY THREE<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Ice-Cube-Amerikkkas-Most-Wanted.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2552\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:20 A.M.<\/strong> The May\/June issue of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waxpoetics.com\/2010\/05\/wax-poetics-issue-41\/\">Wax Poetics<\/a><\/em> is about hip hop. I read it cover to cover. The great interview with Ice Cube inspired me to listen to <em>AmeriKKKa&#8217;s Most Wanted<\/em> on vinyl (I had it on tape when I was a kid). I put it on this morning and then feel old when I am not in the mood for angry rap before I have coffee. I think about a video I saw recently of Ice Cube\u2019s son (unfortunate rap name is \u201cOMG\u201d) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=48bKnhuqadY\">performing his first song<\/a>. The video shows his dad standing behind him as he rhymes. Kind of sweet. Cube doesn\u2019t sound so sweet on &#8220;The Nigga Ya Love to Hate.&#8221; I put on a Johnny Clarke record and feel much better.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:30 A.M.<\/strong> William Deresiewicz\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/article\/76066\/look-me?passthru=YzM4M2VlM2Q1MDgzZGJkZjUwZmQ2ODM5MzdhMzlkNWI\">review<\/a> of <em>The Pregnant Widow<\/em> by Martin Amis in <em>The New Republic<\/em>. There are a few critics who I admire deeply. They remind me of the best English teachers because they light up a book for me, reveal and clarify things I hadn\u2019t considered. Deresiewicz is brilliant.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:45 P.M.<\/strong> Charles Simic on <em>The New York Review of Books<\/em> Blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2010\/jul\/07\/last-words\/\">about Robert K. Elder\u2019s <em>Last Words of the Executed<\/a><\/em>. I love the post, and I promptly order Elder\u2019s book. Introduction by <span class=\"annotation\">Studs Terkel<\/span>! Many of the final words of the condemned are <span class=\"annotation\">moving<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/lushlife.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/lushlife.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2554\" \/><\/a><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:15 P.M.<\/strong> Opening of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/09\/arts\/design\/09lush.html?_r=1\">Lush Life group art exhibit<\/a> on the Lower East Side. The concept of organizing a whole neighborhood of visual-art show around a book\u2014a book that was itself organized around the Lower East Side\u2014is interesting, and I like Price\u2019s book. I head to my favorite gallery in NYC, Invisible-Exports, on Orchard Street. I know the owners, who are not only participating in the neighborhood-wide show, but who also reached out to Richard Price to produce <a href=\"http:\/\/invisible-exports.com\/exhibitions\/19_lushlife\/lushlife_video.html\">this cool walking tour.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">1:30 A.M.<\/strong> Late night Internet image prowling. I find it and take it into bed with me, exchanging a book for my laptop. I\u2019d rather sleep with a book.
