Eleanor Henderson\u2019s debut, about a Vermont stoner in 1980s New York, slipped under my radar. (Apparently no one else missed it\u2014it appears on every best-of list from The New York Times<\/em> to O<\/em>.) If only I owned a bathtub, I\u2019d be reading it there right now. \u00a0\u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n

What a thrill to discover that Spotify has all of Germaine Tailleferre\u2019s piano works<\/a>! The only woman in the group of French avant-garde composers knows as Les Six, Tailleferre\u2019s engaging, inventive compositions make for perfect winter listening. \u2014Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n

It took me weeks, and several recommendations, to sit down and read Zach Baron\u2019s fifteen-thousand-word article<\/a> on Hunter S. Thompson (\u201ca savant at \u2026 writerly failure\u201d), the self-loathing of journalism, traffic jams, desert hackers, and the depressing truth of Las Vegas, but I\u2019m glad that I did. It\u2019s territory that could be trite but here feels both thoughtful and fresh. \u2014Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think I\u2019ve discovered literature\u2019s best (literal) snake: Kaa, from Kipling\u2019s Jungle Book<\/em><\/a>\u2014specifically at the end of the chapter \u201cKaa\u2019s Hunting.\u201d After barreling into a terrified throng of monkeys and bashing through a stone wall with his head, the massive rock python begins coiling and uncoiling his more than six feet of body in a\u00a0mesmerizing\u00a0slow dance that lures all who watch into his deadly grip. Last summer I read Perry Anderson\u2019s wonderfully synoptic essay on the historical novel<\/a> in The London Review of Books<\/em>, but the winter is my season for door-stoppers. Last week I raced through Joseph Roth\u2019s <\/a>The Radetzky March<\/a>\u2014<\/em>empire has never declined so speedily\u2014and I\u2019m now making my way through Walter Scott\u2019s Waverly<\/em><\/a>. Some people say Scott is only of interest to literary historians. Don\u2019t believe them. Waverly <\/em>contains the nineteenth-century novel in embyro, but it\u2019s also a great story. \u2014Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n

There hasn\u2019t been much coverage of Tropical Storm Washi, but these stunning photographs<\/a> from The Atlantic<\/em> show just how devastating the deadliest storm of the year was when it hit the Philippines last week. \u2014Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am following my best friend Elaine\u2019s recommendation this week, that of Dorothy Whipple\u2019s\u00a0Someone at a Distance<\/em><\/a>.
