It\u2019s been that kind of week. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chuck Klosterman offers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantland.com\/story\/_\/id\/7319858\/the-people-hate-tim-tebow\">one explanation<\/a> for why\u00a0Broncos\u2019 quarterback Tim Tebow is so polarizing: \u201cThe crux here, the issue driving this whole \u2018Tebow Thing,\u2019 is the matter of faith &#8230; The upside to secular thinking is that\u2014in theory\u2014your skepticism will prove correct. Your rightness might be emotionally unsatisfying, but it confirms a stable understanding of the universe. Sports fans who love statistics fall into this camp. People who reject cognitive dissonance build this camp and find the firewood. But Tebow wrecks all that, because he makes blind faith a viable option. His faith in God, his followers\u2019 faith in him\u2014it all defies modernity. This is why people care so much. He is making people wonder if they should try to believe things they don&#8217;t actually believe.\u201d \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This weekend I\u2019ll be hoping to see one of the more curious, and surely more fascinating, Nobel acceptance speeches as the Swedish poet Tomas Transtr\u00f6mer, who lost his speech and the use of his right hand after a stroke some twenty years ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/health\/2011\/10\/07\/nobel-prize-winner-plays-one-handed-piano-after-stroke\/\">accepts his prize by playing the piano<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holyspiritmonasterygifts.com\/Fruitcake\/products\/4\/\">fruitcake from Holy Spirit Monastery<\/a> in Georgia\u2014rich with fruit and pecans and liberally doused in peach brandy\u2014has converted many a fruitcake-scoffer. And if you know one of those defiant iconoclasts who already loves it, well, you\u2019ve found your holiday gift for the foreseeable future. (Mine arrived last night and we\u2019ve already eaten half!) \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In her debut novel, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dalkeyarchive.com\/book\/?GCOI=15647100037310\" target=\"_blank\">The Faster I Walk The Smaller I Am<\/a><\/em>, Kjersti A. Skomsvold has created a world\u2014through the eyes of a terribly shy old woman who ponders death\u2014that is calm and incredibly strange. \u2014<strong>Jessica Calderon<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I eagerly started reading a galley of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Men-Space-Vintage-Tom-McCarthy\/dp\/0307388220\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1323445283&amp;sr=1-1\">Men in Space<\/a><\/em>, Tom McCarthy\u2019s first novel, which will be published in the US for the first time in February. The first hundred pages contains a very funny letter from a gay Netherlandish art curator on V\u00e1clav Havel\u2019s reinvention of Czech military costumes: \u201cAfter two thousand years, Plato\u2019s philosopher king becomes a reality\u2014and the first thing he does is get some fag to spruce up his goons and make them march around more aesthetically.
