Isaac Rosenberg\u2019s poems, for instance, moved from prewar patriotic exultation\u2014\u201cFlash, mailed seraphim, \/ Your burning spears\u201d\u2014to, three years later, this numb, bone-dry mutter from the trenches: \u201cDroll rat, they would shoot you if they knew \/ Your cosmopolitan sympathies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Ivor Gurney\u2019s \u201cTo His Love\u201d you see the thing happening not in mid-career but in mid-poem\u2014between lines, in a line break, specifically the last one. It\u2019s the most astonishing line break I\u2019ve ever encountered. It\u2019s the sound of a culture\u2019s poetic history cracking in half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo His Love\u201d begins as an almost doggedly traditional elegy, with the Byronic echo of \u201cWe\u2019ll walk no more on Cotswold.\u201d It meanders through rivers, beasts, flowers, and the old tropes\u2014nobility, \u201cpride,\u201d \u201cmemoried.\u201d We are lulled into thinking that the urgency of \u201cCover him, cover him soon!\u201d arises from intense soldierly love, rather than the desperate need to hide a shredded corpse, that \u201cred, wet \/ Thing.\u201d The euphemistic Latinate d\u00e9cor is stripped away; the haplessly tall <em>T<\/em> does it\u2019s pitiful duty by the form, like a Tommy too shell-shocked to hide, a standing target.<\/p>\n<p>The fragile Gurney was gassed and traumatized by the war, and he lived out his days in asylums. <!--more-->I never forget this poem of never forgetting:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>He\u2019s gone, and all our plans<br \/> Are useless indeed.<br \/> We\u2019ll walk no more on Cotswolds<br \/> Where the sheep feed<br \/> Quietly and take no heed.<\/p>\n<p>His body that was so quick<br \/> Is not as you<br \/> Knew it, on Severn River<br \/> Under the blue<br \/> Driving our small boat through.<\/p>\n<p>You would not know him now \u2026<br \/> But still he died<br \/> Nobly, so cover him over<br \/> With violets of pride<br \/> Purple from Severn side.<\/p>\n<p>Cover him, cover him soon!<br \/> And with thick-set<br \/> Masses of memoried flowers\u2014<br \/> Hide that red wet<br \/> Thing I must somehow forget.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Glyn Maxwell\u2019s most recent book, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/One-Thousand-Nights-Counting-Selected\/dp\/0374226482\/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1320945211&amp;sr=1-6\">One Thousand Nights and Counting: Selected Poems<\/a><em>, was published by Farrar, Straus &amp; Giroux in September<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of Veterans Day, we are re-running this favorite post.
