It tasted like godhead\u201d? He was the first thing I read every Wednesday. Now that he\u2019s gone to the National desk, do I have to start reading the news? \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been enjoying Amor Towles\u2019s Depression-era <a href=\"http:\/\/amortowles.com\/\"><em>Rules of Civility<\/em><\/a> with delight; it\u2019s a good read in every sense. \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m excited to see<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/events\/592\"> this spectacle of a concert <\/a>at the New Museum on Saturday. Pitchfork and its sister site, Altered Zones have invited a lineup of ten performers and five DJs to take over the museum lobby, auditorium, and sky deck after-hours alongside an installation by Nuit Blanche New York. \u2014<strong>Artie Niederhoffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was curiously entranced and chilled by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lost-Photographs-Captain-Scott-Expedition\/dp\/0316178500\">newly discovered photographs of Scott\u2019s expedition<\/a> to the South Pole. They\u2019re bleak, beautiful, and suffused with doom.<strong> <\/strong>\u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This week I went to a talk advertising itself as a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.storefrontnews.org\/exhibitions_events\/events?e=452\">productive disagreement<\/a>\u201d between art critic Hal Foster and architecture theorist Sylvia Lavin. As a disaffected academic, I am sometimes wary of claims to productivity in theory-based discussions. This evening proved me wrong and set me digging deeper into the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2011\/sep\/16\/art-architecture-complex-foster-review\">Foster<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyjournalofbooks.com\/review\/kissing-architecture\">Lavin<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Emma Gallwey <\/strong><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest prize for children\u2019s literature, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award\u2014named for the Swedish woman who dreamt up Pippi\u2014just announced the nominees for 2012. \u2014<strong>Jessica Calderon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/movies?hl=en&amp;near=New+York,+NY&amp;dq=movie+the+weekend&amp;mid=82e2fafa80daacdf&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=N5mgTrLDIMPh0QGF6JHjBA&amp;ved=0CCEQwAMoAg\"><em>Weekend<\/em><\/a> is, somehow, at once a hyperrealistic, can\u2019t-believe-it\u2019s-not-documentary-style story and a conventional romantic comedy that includes a grand gesture at a train station.
