Barnes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/562\/the-art-of-fiction-no-165-julian-barnes\">in his 2000 <em>Paris<\/em> <em>Review<\/em> interview,<\/a> describes writing literature as \u201cproducing grand, beautiful, well-ordered lies that tell more truth than any assemblage of facts.\u201d But it was in 1998, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/miscellaneous\/1157\/the-man-in-the-back-row-has-a-question-v-british-literature-julian-barnes\">when he fielded our questions about British literature<\/a>, that he shed some light on the prize itself.
