Courtesy David Zwirner.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While I was in Los Angeles, I had the chance to see two very different\u2014but very \u201cCalifornia\u201d\u2014exhibits, both of which I\u2019d recommend to anyone. The first, Robert Irwin\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lmgallery.com\/exhibitions\/robert-irwin\/\">Way Out West<\/a>\u201d at L&amp;M Arts, is a light installation that&#8217;s visually engaging on its own terms, but even more so to those familiar with Irwin\u2019s writing. More straightforward but just as interesting, LACMA\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacma.org\/art\/exhibition\/californiadesign\">California Design, 1930\u20131965<\/a>\u201d is a colorful, exhilarating showcase of all things \u201cmodern,\u201d from lobster-print swimsuits to Ray and Charles Eames\u2019s living room (which is fully reassembled in the museum) to the original Barbie Dream House. It\u2019s a survey not just of West Coast design, but of the crafting of the modern conception of California as we know it.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sigrid Nunez\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/atlasandco.com\/feature\/245\/sempre_susan_a_memoir_of_susan_sontag\/\">Sempre Susan<\/a><\/em> doesn\u2019t just evoke Susan Sontag, the person, with hard-won sympathy, insight, and cool; it contains (in a very tiny space) material for an entire novel of idealism and disillusionment. This Sontag\u2014who \u201coften struck me as someone who wanted to be feeling ten times what she actually felt\u201d\u2014is a tragic figure, and this memoir captures the spirit of the spirit of her times.\u00a0\u2014<strong><strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had, much to my shame, never read the fiction of Alan Hollinghurst until this last Indian summer weekend, when I found myself utterly absorbed in the world of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.com\/book\/81879\/the-strangers-child-by-alan-hollinghurst\/9780307272768\/\">The Stranger\u2019s Child<\/a><\/em>. Its prose is marvelously precise, its subjects both literary and sensual, and its general character inimitably English. \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidzwirner.com\/\">Lisa Yuskavage\u2019s<\/a> ethereal paintings are on display at David Zwirner until November 5.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Jessica Calderon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last spring, the culture guerrillas at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bidoun.org\/\"><em>Bidoun<\/em><\/a> went to Cairo to check in on the revolution. They came back with their Summer issue (#25), which  includes interviews with graffiti artists, tour guides, ex-members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and hard-core metal musicians. Also, dream  narratives, photographs, and thumbnail sketches of the dozens of the new political parties. There is very little analysis and no claim to know what comes next. But, more than anything else I\u2019ve read, it gives you a sense of life on the ground. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I just discovered the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettersofnote.com\/2011\/09\/dear-loser.html\">Letters of Note <\/a>and could not tear myself away. They\u2019ve archived, photographed, and transcribed amazing correspondences: everything from a letter Kurt Vonnegut wrote to his family describing his capture in 1944, to a vintage rejection slip from Sub Pop records addressed to \u201cDear Loser.\u201d \u00a0\u2014<strong>Artie Niederhoffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone I know has been sending me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2011\/11\/all-the-single-ladies\/8654\/\">Kate Bolick\u2019s fascinating piece<\/a> on marriage, coupling through history, gender imbalances, and, well, as the title says, \u201cAll the Single Ladies.\u201d \u2014<strong>D.
