So I asked some of my favorite writers to describe their early jobs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em>Nam Le:<\/strong> I ran through the usual money-makers of misspent youth: door-knocking in the outer \u2018burbs, Christmas-carolling at the bottom of escalators,\u00a0child-laboring in the family business,\u00a0pyramid-selling to my parents, my friends, my parents\u2019 friends, my friends\u2019 parents.\u00a0I did time in a call center, spent one year on my knees lacing up Doc Marten boots for feral teenagers, and another fending off feral twenty-somethings while editing the university student paper. Then I finished my law degree\u2014and threw in my lot with the greatest ferals of all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colum McCann:<\/strong> I was a \u201cwilderness educator\u201d\u00a0back in Texas in the mid-eighties, after taking an eighteen-month bicycle trip across America.\u00a0This meant working with kids who were at risk, or juvenile delinquents.\u00a0We lived out in the woods for three months at a stretch, built pine-pole shelters, treehouses, an outdoor latrine, a gravity-fed shower.\u00a0It was a magnificent interruption in my life: out under the stars.\u00a0At night I used to read these tough,\u00a0streetwise kids to sleep\u2014<em>Catcher in the Rye<\/em>, <em>The Grapes of Wrath<\/em>, and a\u00a0fable called <em>Fup<\/em> by Jim Dodge.\u00a0They loved <em>Fup<\/em> in particular, a fable about a duck, a sound-anagram for \u201cFucked Up.\u201d\u00a0I still hear from these\u00a0kids\u2014they\u2019re all over the country now and generally they\u2019re out of trouble, except for the fact that they\u00a0might be reading <em>Fup<\/em> to their kids.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chris Flynn is the\u00a0books editor at <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/\">The Big Issue<\/a> <em>and the fiction editor at <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.australianbookreview.com.au\/\">Australian Book Review<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most dust jackets list only literary accomplishments, but I\u2019ve always been a fan of offbeat author bios.
