Subjects ranged from <\/em>The Onion<em> (everyone\u2019s favorite contemporary humor publication) to Dickens (in whom \u201cthe archetypes for all modern fiction can be found\u201d) to the possibility of making a living as a poet (consensus: other sources of income help). What follows are a few of the questions the panel addressed. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Should writers date each other?<br \/> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tolkin: No.<br \/> Bardach: Sure, but not in the same genre. That\u2019s the important thing.<br \/>A guest: A writer and a reader?<br \/> Bardach: Well, yes, every writer should have one.<\/p>\n<p><em>How does one get over the fear of the blank page?<br \/> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tolkin: First of all, it\u2019s more a blank screen now. Don\u2019t leave it blank. Put something on it, anything. If it\u2019s bad, you can improve it, tear it apart. If it\u2019s good, even better. The important thing is getting something down, taking that step.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<div><em>How does it feel when your book is adapted [into a movie] but you\u2019re not asked to be involved? Is it hard?<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><br \/><\/em><\/div>\n<div>Tolkin: I take the money and run.<\/div>\n<div>Lethem: I\u2019d actually prefer not to be involved. I mean, I wrote the book: I\u2019ve spent all that time with it already. And it\u2019s a very different medium. Better to work on someone else\u2019s story.<\/div>\n<div>Lutz: Screw up someone else\u2019s book, you mean.<\/div>\n<div>Kipen: Thus far, no one has tried to adapt any of my book reviews. But I\u2019m open to it.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>What are your goals for a new novel? What\u2019s your hope for it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tolkin: Kill every other book on the shelf.<br \/>Lethem: It\u2019s a great line, but I actually feel the opposite: it\u2019s those other books on the shelf that inspire me, and I want to join their company, add to that conversation. And, you know, looking around this room\u2014I\u2019m going to get very sincere, here\u2014it\u2019s affirming. This is not what we are made for, what I am made for. We sit and we write words, and for whatever reason, you\u2019re all out here to listen, and see us.
