The evening, like the book, takes the form of a conversation between <em>n+1<\/em> editor Keith Gessen and the hedge fund manager. The latter was not in disguise at the event, but people who knew him kept creepily referring to him in code as \u201cHFM.\u201d From all I can tell, he has retired and moved to Austin, so I\u2019m not sure why the anonymity is so important. He looks like a \u201cSteve\u201d to me. Maybe an \u201cAndy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:30 P.M.<\/strong> I&#8217;ve enjoyed the culture diaries contributed by other people, and it&#8217;s been interesting to see their different approaches. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/16\/the-culture-diaries-rita-konig\/\">Rita Konig<\/a>, I&#8217;ve mostly chosen to <span class=\"annotation\">focus<\/span> on a few things a day that captured my prolonged attention. I flip through <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Reality-Hunger-Manifesto-David-Shields\/dp\/0307273539\">Reality Hunger<\/a><\/em> by David Shields again. I have extensive notes for a review, but I need to put them together. Several of these notes are just quotes from Shields\u2019 many promotional interviews, almost all of which have annoyed me as much as the book did. I also take a look at the first few pages of Shields\u2019 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Black-Planet-Facing-during-Season\/dp\/0803293542\/\">Black Planet<\/a><\/em>, his chronicle of the 1994-95 season of the NBA\u2019s Seattle SuperSonics, lent to me by a friend. <em>Planet<\/em> is a better read than <em>Reality Hunger<\/em>, but I won\u2019t know how much that says until I get through more of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:58 P.M.<\/strong> Before going to bed, I check the night\u2019s baseball box scores on ESPN.com. For six months a year, this is a <span class=\"annotation\">nightly ritual<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY TWO<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/something-for-nothing.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"194\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2200\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:30 A.M.<\/strong> I\u2019ve been reading Jackson Lears\u2019 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Something-Nothing-America-Jackson-Lears\/dp\/0670031739\">Something for Nothing: Luck in America<\/a><\/em>, partly because I\u2019ve been <span class=\"annotation\">meaning to for years<\/span> and partly because I\u2019m treating it as research for a potential writing project of my own. The tone is somewhere between generalist and academic, and halfway through I\u2019m enjoying it and finding it useful, particularly the early sections on early-American religious attitudes toward gambling.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">1:15 P.M.<\/strong> I go to <span class=\"annotation\">Andrew Sullivan<\/span>\u2019s blog to catch up on the last few days. I\u2019ve been visiting the site less often lately for various reasons\u2014I\u2019ve been busy; reading about Sarah Palin at length is depressing even when you agree with the writer; etc.\u2014but probably three million times since he launched it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/joan-rivers-012308-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2201\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:30 P.M.<\/strong> I go to the IFC Center with my girlfriend to see the new documentary <em><span class=\"annotation\">Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work<\/span><\/em>. Following an obsessed person around for a while is a reliable documentary formula, and Rivers, at seventy-five, remains obsessed with her career. She\u2019s still funny, maniacally driven, and poignantly unsatisfied.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:30 P.M.<\/strong> Read a little more of <em>Something for Nothing<\/em> and write some notes about my own project. Listen to <em>Astral Weeks<\/em> by Van Morrison while doing it. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY THREE<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:00 P.M.<\/strong> I skim through a few of my books by and about <span class=\"annotation\">William James<\/span>. I\u2019m planning to devote a week to James on <a href=\"http:\/\/thesecondpass.com\/\">The Second Pass<\/a> in late August to mark the centenary of his death. I\u2019m trying to decide how to structure it, who to approach for contributions, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/curiousgeorge-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2202\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:00 P.M.<\/strong> Uptown to visit my four-year-old nephew. He screens his new DVD of short films starring Curious George for me, and I\u2019m genuinely entertained. Then I read him <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mr-Putter-Tabby-Catch-Cold\/dp\/0152047603\">Mr. Putter &#038; Tabby Catch the Cold<\/a><\/em>, one in a series of charming books about a lonely old man and his cat.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:30 P.M.<\/strong> I watch the final two episodes of the recently concluded season of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/30-rock\">30 Rock<\/em> on Hulu<\/a>. Alec Baldwin: \u201cNancy is a fiery Irish nutjob descended from bog people.\u201d Tracy Morgan: \u201cOur basketball hoop was a rib cage!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY FOUR<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:30 A.M.<\/strong> I read <a href=\"http:\/\/noggs.typepad.com\/the_reading_experience\/2010\/06\/i-think-it-is-fair-to-say-that-although-particular-books-of-his-might-receive-a-few-less-than-effusive-endorsements-richard.html\">Dan Green\u2019s opinion<\/a> of Richard Russo at <a href=\"http:\/\/noggs.typepad.com\/\">The Reading Experience<\/a>. He argues that Russo is too beloved and taken too seriously by critics. I disagree. Green uses mostly the two most recent novels as fodder, and one could agree those two don\u2019t match Russo\u2019s best without running him down more generally speaking. Everything before those novels is uniformly excellent, and it\u2019s understandable if that built up some good will among critics. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Risk-Pool-Richard-Russo\/dp\/0679753834\">The Risk Pool<\/a><\/em> is my personal favorite.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/BEE-Imperial-Bedrooms2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"219\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2207\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 A.M.<\/strong> I gather <a href=\"http:\/\/thesecondpass.com\/?p=6007\">a few reviews<\/a> of Bret Easton Ellis\u2019 new novel to post on the site. Most critics are harsh, and convincingly so. On the other side, <a href=\"http:\/\/bnreview.barnesandnoble.com\/t5\/Reviews-Essays\/Imperial-Bedrooms\/ba-p\/2794\">Molly Young makes a smart case<\/a> for why the novel works because of the very things other critics dislike, but I <span class=\"annotation\">can\u2019t say she sways me<\/span> to read it.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:15 P.M.<\/strong> On <em>The Paris Review<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/parisreview\">very own Twitter page<\/a>, I find a great writer&#8217;s creed from <a href=\"http:\/\/parisreview.org\/viewinterview.php\/prmMID\/4720\">Lawrence Durrell<\/a>: &#8220;I think the best regimen is to get up early, insult yourself a bit in the shaving mirror, and then pretend you&#8217;re cutting wood.&#8221; I&#8217;ve got the insult part down pat.<\/p>\n<p><em>Check back tomorrow for the second installment of John Williams&#8217; Culture Diary.
