It is also an old-fashioned work of philosophy: a series of DIY experiments that teach you how and why to doubt your intuitions about things as basic as cause and effect.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ransom Center has launched <a href=\"http:\/\/research.hrc.utexas.edu\/bookshopdoor\/home.cfm#1\">a curiously fascinating exhibit <\/a>online, based around a door from Frank Shay\u2019s bookshop that was signed by hundreds of the habitu\u00e9s of 1920s Greenwich Village, including Theodore Dreiser, John Dos Passos, Upton Sinclair, Sherwood Anderson, and Sinclair Lewis. The original shop was across the street from my current apartment and exploring the site, and the interconnected histories of the people who frequented the store, is a nifty way back in time\u2014like <a href=\"http:\/\/research.hrc.utexas.edu\/bookshopdoor\/thebohemians.cfm#1\">a portal to twenties social networking<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been looking forward to pulling Dalkey Archive\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Stories-Essays-Mina-British-Literature\/dp\/1564786307\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1316110139&amp;sr=8-1\">collection of stories and essays by Mina Loy<\/a> off my shelf, but it hasn&#8217;t yet found it\u2019s way into my reading cycle. I have managed to dip my toe in by way of <em>Triple Canopy<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/canopycanopycanopy.com\/14\/the_sacred_prostitute\">excerpt of her play \u201cThe Sacred Prostitute,\u201d<\/a> a very funny send-up of, among other things, men\u2019s attitudes toward women. What\u2019s more, some young genius at the magazine has put a handful of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pictureboxinc.com\/artists-authors\/c-f\">CF\u2019s sublime, seductive drawings <\/a>into the mix. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Word-Mouth-Spanish-1916-1959-Bilingual\/dp\/0811218856\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1316169642&amp;sr=8-1\"><em>By Word of Mouth<\/em><\/a>, a compilation of William Carlos Williams\u2019s translations from Spanish\u2014more numerous than you might think. My favorites are his versions of Neruda\u2019s \u201cOde to My Socks\u201d (\u201cThey were \/ so beautiful \/ that for the first time \/ my feet seemed to me \/ unacceptable\u201d), and the great Nicanor Parra\u2019s \u201cPiano Solo,\u201d which includes this epigram on the art of translation: \u201cWe do not speak solely to be heard \/ But so that others may speak \/ And the echo precede the voice that produces it.\u201d \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/thedoghouseband.blogspot.com\/\">David Gates and The Dog House Band<\/a>, I&#8217;ve got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1_cu7v6VmyQ\">this drinkin\u2019 thing<\/a>. \u2014<strong>L.S.<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writers are doing amazing things on the audio sharing service\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/\">SoundCloud<\/a>. You can follow Penguin Books, which has a great new podcast, or fiction writers like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theyoutrilogy.com\/\">Paul Rome<\/a>, whose stories are set to music and feature a character who is bullied out of Bushwick after he writes a satirical novel about its art scene. (Our protagonist keeps getting tofu cream cheese on his bagels and suspects resentful baristas are to blame.) \u2014<strong>Artie Niederhoffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- @font-face {   font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; }table.MsoNormalTable { font-size: 10pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } --> \u201cReality has finally caught up with science fiction.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/16\/science\/space\/16planet.html?_r=1&amp;hp\">Our very own Tatooine<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While reminiscing about the late, great,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandmagazine.com\/ME2\/dirmod.asp?sid=E73ABD6180B44874871A91F6BA5C249C&amp;nm=Arts+%26+Entertainment&amp;type=Publishing&amp;mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&amp;mid=1578600D80804596A222593669321019&amp;tier=4&amp;id=7610920283BB4B80812F8991AA6ECCBA\">Miller\u2019s Dining Room<\/a> of Cleveland, I ran across an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/obituaries\/index.ssf\/2010\/07\/doris_urbansky_led_millers_din.html\">obituary<\/a> and was struck by this amazing epitaph: \u201cBut Doris Jean (Miller) Urbansky, who started Miller\u2019s and led it for 39 years, will be remembered more than anything for hot sticky buns, topped with cinnamon and brown sugar.
