Developed by the creative team behind <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adbusters.org\/\">Adbusters<\/a><\/em> and billed as an interactive documentary, it explores the memories of a now-vanished mining town. It\u2019s part film, part photo album, and completely fascinating. \u2013<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A conundrum: two petite biographies from Yale\u2019s Jewish Lives series\u2014Joshua Rubenstein\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Leon-Trotsky-Revolutionarys-Jewish-Lives\/dp\/0300137249\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1315504377&amp;sr=1-1\">Leon Trotsky<\/a><\/em><em> <\/em>and Vivian Gornick\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Emma-Goldman-Revolution-Jewish-Lives\/dp\/0300137265\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1315504359&amp;sr=1-1\">Emma Goldman<\/a><\/em>. Which to read first? Sorry, Lev, the anarchist woman wins. \u2013<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A friend just drew my attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plumhamptonsmagazine.com\/issue\/32547\">an article in the June issue of <em>Plum Hamptons<\/em><\/a> by Taylor Plimpton about his father, touch football at the Matthiessens\u2019, and the <em>Review<\/em> as seen from a child\u2019s perspective: \u201cOf my introduction long ago to the rich literary culture of the Hamptons,\u201d it begins, \u201cI remember best the nose-hair.\u201d\u00a0\u2013<strong>L.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the last week to see the incredible\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collections.madmuseum.org\/code\/emuseum.asp?emu_action=advsearch&amp;rawsearch=exhibitionid\/%2C\/is\/%2C\/530\/%2C\/true\/%2C\/false&amp;profile=exhibitions\">diorama show<\/a> at the Museum of Art and Design,\u00a0\u201cOtherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities.\u201d The title describes it well.\u00a0\u2013<strong>Artie Niederhoffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1329457\/\"><em>Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life<\/em><\/a> is kind of goofy,  very uneven, and has an unwieldy third act. Still necessary viewing for  the Serge-o-phile. And I thought Laetitia Casta made a stunning  Bardot! \u2013<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent perusal of a used book store turned up a Dover Thrift reprint of Clarence Cook\u2019s 1881\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/store.doverpublications.com\/0486285863.html\" target=\"_blank\">The House Beautiful: Essays on Beds and Tables and Stools and Candlesticks<\/a><\/em>.  As a furniture enthusiast, I enjoyed its strong opinions on dining-room  tables and wash-stands; as a New Yorker, I found it to be rather  comforting. There\u2019s just something nice about knowing that Victorian  Manhattanites were packed in as uncomfortably as today\u2019s: \u201cIn city  houses, particularly in New-York, where I believe we are more scrimped  for room &#8230; even the richest people are obliged to squeeze themselves  into a less number of square feet than in any other city in the world  calling itself great.             <!-- @font-face {   font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; }@font-face {   font-family: \"Times-Roman\"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; }table.MsoNormalTable { font-size: 10pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } --> \u201d \u2013<strong>Clare Fentress<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over Labor Day weekend I read\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sailing-Alone-Around-Joshua-Slocum\/dp\/1420931768\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1315514798&amp;sr=8-3\">Sailing Alone Around the World<\/a><\/em>, Joshua Slocum\u2019s 1899 memoir, because I\u2019ll be damned if I give up the summery feeling of adventure without a fight. \u2013<strong>Cody\u00a0Wiewandt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I went to a garage sale this weekend that boasted a near-complete set of the now nonexistent hardcover\u00a0<em>Horizon<\/em> magazine, and picked up a strange-looking issue with only a large gold Chinese character for \u201cTang\u201d on the cover. Inside, I found an article on the dynasty\u2019s turbulent history by one of my favorite writers, Emily Hahn.
