At least, that\u2019s why I watched the first couple of episodes. Then, well\u2014it was just like that scene in <em>Infinite Jest<\/em> with the Saudi medical attach\u00e9, only with Netflix. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September is officially the beginning of football season in America and the perfect time to read the best football book ever written, Frederick Exley\u2019s fictional memoir\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fans-Notes-Frederick-Exley\/dp\/0679720766\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314911369&amp;sr=8-1\">A Fan\u2019s Notes<\/a><\/em>, which has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with why we watch it.\u00a0\u2014<strong><strong>Cody Wiewandt<\/strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was immediately taken with Jeff Sharlet\u2019s new book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sweet-Heaven-When-Die-Faithlessness\/dp\/0393079635\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314909141&amp;sr=8-1\">Sweet Heaven When I Die<\/a><\/em>. All I had to do was open to the first lines of \u00a0\u201cSweet Fuck All, Colorado:\u201d \u201cWhen I was eighteen I fell hard for the state of Colorado as embodied by a woman with long honey blond hair and speckled green eyes, who drank wine from a coffee mug and whiskey from the bottle.\u201d \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I escaped the hurricane but got stuck in Chicago this weekend, which\u00a0at least gave me a chance to spend time at one of my favorite Evanston\u00a0bookstores, Market Fresh Books (they sell books for $3.99 a pound!).\u00a0Among the treasures I picked up was an illustrated 1882 edition of\u00a0<em>Nicholas Nickleby<\/em>, which I was all the more excited to dive into after\u00a0reading in last week\u2019s\u00a0<em>New Yorker<\/em> about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/08\/29\/110829fa_fact_lepore\">all the \u201cfun\u201d at Dickens camp<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Ali Pechman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s hear it for small presses! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookthug.ca\/\">Bookthug<\/a>, an indie house in Toronto, recently reissued bpNichol\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Captain-Poetry-Poems-Complete\/dp\/1897388608\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314964978&amp;sr=8-1\">The Captain Poetry Poems<\/a><\/em>. Originally released as a mimeograph by bill bissett in 1970, Bookthug\u2019s edition marks the first complete publication of all of the poems in the series, plus a smattering of drawings by Nichol. This is joyous, mythmaking poetry at its best. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of a visit to the hometown of publishing house David R. Godine, I\u2019ve been enjoying Godine author Joe McKendry\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.godine.com\/isbn.asp?isbn=1567922848\">Beneath the Streets of Boston<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s a historical picture book about the country\u2019s first subway system. McKendry\u2019s sepia-toned watercolors are nostalgic and exacting, his prose accessible to readers young and old. Now I\u2019m really looking forward to March, when Godine will be rolling out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.godine.com\/isbn.asp?isbn=156792364X\">a new McKendry book about Times Square.<\/a> \u2014<strong><strong>Clare Fentress <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the anniversary of his emergence from the woods\u2014and because I didn\u2019t get out of the city this summer\u2014I\u2019ve been rereading Thoreau\u2019s\u00a0<em>Walden<\/em>. How could I have forgotten the war between the red ants and the black ants, the wild loon chase across the pond? Thoreau sees everything with new eyes. \u2014<strong><strong><strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The stormy weekend was a good excuse to do nothing but read (not that\u00a0I need one) and I made a little dent in my TBR pile. A friend had been\u00a0recommending Muriel Spark\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Memento-Mori-Muriel-Spark\/dp\/0811214389\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314910345&amp;sr=8-1\">Memento Mori<\/a><\/em> for years, and I can\u2019t believe it took the threat of a hurricane to get me reading. It\u2019s simultaneously a meditation on death and on the indignities of age\u2014and it\u2019s\u00a0completely, utterly hilarious. \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I thought I\u2019d read all of Anthony Hecht\u2019s work until I received this month\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poetrymagazine\/\">Poetry<\/a><\/em> magazine, which features a portfolio of his\u00a0uncollected poems.
