Just in time for Borges\u2019s birthday, Lindsey Carr is curating a collaborative art project documenting creatures that have never been seen. The project,\u00a0The Unseen Bestiary<\/a>, a sort of DIY\u00a0Book of Imaginary Beings<\/em>, is soliciting brief descriptions to accompany Carr\u2019s drawings.\u00a0\u2014Mackenzie Beer<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m rereading Stanley Cavell\u2019s great essay on King Lear (and everything else), \u201cThe Avoidance of Love,\u201d in preparation for what I\u2019m told<\/em> is another great essay, by Mark Greif, in the new issue of n+1<\/em><\/a>. (Some lifetime subscription that<\/em> turned out to be!) \u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been slowly working through the strikingly lyrical essays in\u00a0City Dog<\/a> <\/em>this summer, so\u00a0I was excited to see new poems by W. S. di Piero in the fall issue of ZYZZYVA<\/a><\/em>. Something about them reminded me of the end of summer. \u201cStarting Over\u201d perfectly evoked that late-August feeling of everyone coming home: \u201chere you are the nothing \/ that is the place, \/ and all the places are you, \/ none of them yours to keep.\u201d \u00a0\u2014Ali Pechman<\/strong><\/p>\n

I just learned everything I know about Batman from intern Cody, who puts the super<\/em> back in superheroes<\/em><\/a>. \u2014L.S.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Since I realized that\u00a0Spotify<\/a> has such a great collection of Alan Lomax<\/a> recordings, I\u2019ve been totally hooked.\u00a0\u2014Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n

Moving books around in my house, I rediscovered my copy of Boulevard Transportation<\/a><\/em>, a collaboration between Rudy Burckhardt and Vincent Katz. The former\u2019s photographs\u2014framing and juxtaposing country and city streets, architectural elements, faces\u2014and the latter\u2019s poetry\u2014casual glances and delighted observations\u2014are perfectly suited to each other. On one spread, Burckhardt\u2019s closeup of reeds waving against sun-dappled water is set opposite this from Katz: \u201cI put bare \/ feet to Terra \/ swim in the lake \/ all day long \/ there is nothing \/ to do \/ listen to wind in the trees.\u201d \u2014Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was one of those lame kids without a rock collection, but L\u00e9onard Rosenthal, famed 1920s Parisian jeweler and author of\u00a0The Kingdom of the Pearl<\/a><\/em>, has reformed me. If you aren\u2019t sold on reading about rocks, check out the\u00a0Edmund Dulac illustrations<\/a> that originally accompanied the text. \u2014M.B.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n
