The program\u2014<\/em>The Paris Review <em>Presents New American Writing at the Edinburgh Book Fair\u2014received mixed reviews. One tweeter called it<\/em> \u201c<em>bloomin<\/em>\u2019<em> superb.<\/em>\u201d<em> A blogger asked, <\/em>\u201c<em><\/em><em>Why can<\/em>\u2019<em>t there be events like this in Edinburgh all the time?<\/em>\u201d<em> <\/em><em> One young festival volunteer, less enthusiastically, described it as <\/em>\u201c<em><\/em><em>wordy.<\/em>\u201d<em> <\/em><em> What did she expect? <\/em>\u201c<em><\/em><em>Last year when McSweeney<\/em>\u2019<em>s came, the editor got up on stage and shaved his head.<\/em>\u201d<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For some, head shaving is not an option. Instead, at the end of the night, the <\/em>Paris Review<em> delegates opened the floor to requests for advice, which were submitted on scraps of paper. Most were answered on the spot; others were tucked into a notebook and reviewed on the road, as editors Sullivan and Stein recuperated from the book fair triumph\/fiasco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Could you recommend a travel book about either Japan or Spain?<br \/> \u2014Anon.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are composing this response under deadline in the West Highlands\u2014specifically, in the self-proclaimed \u201c<em><\/em>oldest pub in Scotland,\u201d<em> <\/em> the Lachlann Inn, on the banks of Loch Lomond. As everyone knows, they didn\u2019t have WiFi in 1734 (although they do appear to have had video poker). For this reason, we can\u2019t answer your question in the kind of depth that American readers have come to expect from <em>The Paris Review<\/em>. We can only recommend, in Lorin\u2019s case, Robert Hughes\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Barcelona-Robert-Hughes\/dp\/0679743839\">Barcelona<\/a><\/em> and, in John\u2019s case, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Journey-Thousand-Miles-My-Story\/dp\/0385524560\">Journey of a Thousand Miles<\/a><\/em>, the famous series of travel haiku by Basho. (John would also like to recommend the Laura Veirs song \u201c<em><\/em>Rapture,\u201d<em> <\/em>which is not strictly speaking a travelogue, but does include a tribute to \u201c<em><\/em>lovely Basho \/ his plunking ponds and toads.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Please recommend a good book for our book club. We are currently reading Jennifer Egan<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<strong><em>s novel <\/em>A Visit From the Goon Squad<em> and have recently read such books as <\/em>So Much for That<em>, <\/em>The Dice Man<em>, <\/em>Middlesex<em>, <\/em>Half of a Yellow Sun<em>, <\/em>Oryx and Crake<em>, and <\/em>Rebecca<em>.<br \/> \u2014Marion &amp; Co.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we see the title <em>The Dice Man<\/em>, we both think of the scandal-plagued comedian of our youth, the \u201c<em><\/em>Dice Man,\u201d<em> <\/em>Andrew Dice Clay\u2014and that can\u2019t possibly be what you have in mind. Still, we are struck by the breadth of your reading. Your question has been on our minds. Yesterday we wandered into a small used bookstore at the foot of the Castle mound and both ogled a complete 1910 Robert Louis Stevenson in twenty volumes. John proposed that we donate it to your book club; Lorin found it \u201c<em><\/em>too rich\u201d<em> <\/em> for <em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u2019s \u201c<em><\/em>blood.\u201d<em> <\/em> As a backup, John recommends <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ghost-Light-Joseph-OConnor\/dp\/1846553520\">Ghost Light<\/a><\/em>, Joseph O\u2019Connor\u2019s fictional re-creation of John Millington Synge\u2019s hopeless love affair with the Abbey Theatre actress Molly Allgood. And we both recommend\u2014in the strongest possible terms\u2014our colleague Donald Antrim\u2019s short novel <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Verificationist-Novel-Donald-Antrim\/dp\/0679769439\">The Verficationist<\/a><\/em>, about an academic meeting gone horribly wrong amid the hustle and bustle of an International House of Pancakes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How can I stop being such a sad young literary man?<br \/> \u2014Anna Feintuck<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<strong><em>s companion<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Time will take care of that more quickly than you think.
