If there\u2019s such a thing as bookplate porn, this gorgeous book is the ultimate.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been reading Robert Gottlieb\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lives-Letters-Robert-Gottlieb\/dp\/0374298823\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313604367&amp;sr=8-1\">Lives and Letters<\/a><\/em>, a wonderful collection of essays on some of the century\u2019s most illustrious figures. The portraits of the women, like Sarah Bernhardt, Isadora Duncan, and Margot Fonteyn, particularly sparkle. But my favorite is the short piece on Diana Vreeland, who once said, \u201cPeanut butter is the greatest invention since Christianity,\u201d about her daily lunch: a whole-wheat PB-and-marmalade sandwich, with a glass of scotch.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Ali Pechman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adam Zagajewski\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Unseen-Hand-Poems-Adam-Zagajewski\/dp\/0374280894\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313618966&amp;sr=8-2\">Unseen Hand<\/a><\/em> came out in June, and I wish I hadn\u2019t waited until now to read it.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Clare Fentress<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Between the Acts<\/em>, Virginia Woolf\u2019s final novel, was edited by Leonard and published posthumously with his revisions. Cambridge\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Between-Cambridge-Works-Virginia-Woolf\/dp\/0521847176\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313608569&amp;sr=1-1\">new annotated edition<\/a> not only restores the original draft, but also provides a rich halo of context. \u2013<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While a staff pick praising the work of the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>\u2019s Southern editor John Jeremiah Sullivan feels a lot like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectionofperplexion.wordpress.com\/2010\/11\/25\/nom-44\" target=\"_blank\">Lemmy<\/a> wearing a Motorhead shirt, Sullivan\u2019s forthcoming collection of essays,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pulphead-Essays-John-Jeremiah-Sullivan\/dp\/0374532907\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313684637&amp;sr=8-1\">Pulphead<\/a><\/em>, is hands down the best thing I\u2019ve read all year. Sullivan\u2019s voice is straight out of bar stories, and his subjects\u2014from Christian rockers at Creationfest to the Indiana origins of Axl Rose to proto\u2013Tea Party protesters\u2014line up for comic exploitation like so many fish in a barrel. But at the moment when lesser writers would pull the trigger and snigger, Sullivan steps back and asks you to understand the people he encounters on their own terms. Which is not to say the essays won\u2019t have you laughing louder than public decency allows\u2014because they will. But it\u2019s their rare combination of bracing intelligence and empathy that stays with you. \u2014<strong>Peter Conroy<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My most anticipated summer film:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontfeartheinternet.com\/the-basics\/fear-not\">Don\u2019t Fear the Internet<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0Next step is getting cast in the sequel to the Facebook movie (a girl can dream).\u00a0\u2014<strong>Mackenzie Beer<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After discovering that Netflix is streaming a handful of films by Hong Kong maestro Johnnie To, I went straight for <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Johnnie-Heroic-Trio-Golden-Collection\/dp\/B000S0FPMU\">The Heroic Trio<\/a><\/em>, a kinetic superheroine flick starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, and Maggie Cheung. Yes, it <em>is<\/em> that good. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have a moment, try Mavis Gallant\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.granta.com\/Online-Only\/Memory-and-Invention\"><em>Granta<\/em> essay<\/a> on \u201cMemory and Invention.\u201d \u2013<strong>S.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/27003856\">Passive-aggressive little notepad<\/a>, you remind me of my fifth-grade teacher. Other than that, I have no theories as to what\u2019s going on here.
