A quarterly devoted to long-form journalism, with generous helpings of fact-based <em>bandes dessin\u00e9es<\/em> and photo essays reminiscent of the old <em>National Geographic<\/em>, <em>XXI<\/em> has been a somewhat unlikely hit with readers and bookstores. The magazine runs no ads, has no publicity department, conducts no market research, has minimal Web presence, and offers no discount to subscribers. As cofounder Patrick de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry explains, \u201cThe magazine\u2019s worth what it\u2019s worth.\u201d \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been reading Beryl Bainbridge\u2019s last novel,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Girl-Polka-Dot-Dress\/dp\/1609450566\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1312482996&amp;sr=1-1\">The Girl in the Polka Dot Dress<\/a><\/em>, which was published posthumously this year. It\u2019s strange and bleak and interesting, a little disturbing. It\u2019s apparently based on Bainbridge herself, as well as the mysterious woman rumored to have been involved in Robert F. Kennedy\u2019s assassination. \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This weekend I plan to check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinamericamagazine.com\/news-opinion\/news\/2011-07-28\/metropolitan-lucian-freud\/\">Lucian Freud show at the Met<\/a>. Freud, who died in July, once said, \u201cI paint people, not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they are like, but how they\u00a0happen to be.\u201d He\u2019s not for everyone, and that\u2019s a good thing.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Cody Wiewandt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m currently working my way through this little audio treasure: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/sound\/polish.html\">forty years of Polish experimental radio<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been flipping through Nabokov\u2019s annotated copy of\u00a0<em>Madame Bovary<\/em> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/locations\/schwarzman\/berg-collection-english-and-american-literature\">the Berg Collection in the New York Public Library<\/a>. If Flaubert\u2019s prose doesn\u2019t astound, then Nabokov\u2019s illustrations of Emma Bovary\u2019s chignon, his passing jibes at less than adequate translators, and the chronological maps of the author\u2019s life will.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Mackenzie Beer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The relaunch of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.takethehandle.com\/\">Take the Handle<\/a><\/em>\u2014an \u201conline hub of rascalism, repartee &amp; recreation\u201d\u2014includes short pieces by former <em>Review<\/em> editor Nathaniel Rich as well as an interview with the makers of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plimptonmovie.com\/\">Plimpton!<\/a><\/em>, the forthcoming documentary of the <em>Review<\/em>\u2019s first editor. \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Paris I found myself reading several postbreakup novels: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/After-Claude-Review-Books-Classics\/dp\/1590173635\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1312483360&amp;sr=8-1\">After Claude<\/a><\/em> (thanks, Sadie!), plus two books by Jean-Philippe Toussaint about a recurring ex-girlfriend named Marie. (My favorite, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Truth-about-Marie-French-Literature\/dp\/1564783677\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1312483384&amp;sr=1-1\">The Truth About Marie<\/a><\/em>, comes out next month.) Toussaint has been described as a writer of nouveaux <em>nouveaux romans<\/em>, but he is dreamy and funny and haunted in a way all his own. \u2014<strong>L. S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0New York Post<\/em> outdid itself with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/local\/he_tortured_troll_4va634RDTCEjdYUfX6uCWL\">this piece of reportage.<\/a> \u2014<strong>S.
