Johnson is a branding consultant (he worked at Lexicon Branding, a firm that has invented names such as Blackberry and Powerbook).\u00a0\u201c\u2018Feminine\u2019 brand names,\u201d he writes, \u201clike Chanel, are often iambs; \u2018masculine\u2019 ones, like Black &amp; Decker, tend to be trochees.\u201d \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to reclaim my childhood, I dug up Edward Gorey\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Epiplectic-Bicycle-Edward-Gorey\/dp\/0151003149\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1311953055&amp;sr=1-1\">The Epiplectic Bicycle<\/a><\/em>: \u201cIt was the day after Tuesday and the day before Wednesday.\u00a0Embley and Yewbert were hitting one another with croquet mallets.\u201d\u00a0Need I say more? \u2014<strong><strong>Eli Mandel<\/strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I picked up Sara Wheeler\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Magnetic-North-Notes-Arctic-Circle\/dp\/0374200130\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1311953080&amp;sr=1-1\">The Magnetic North<\/a><\/em> for a brief respite from the city heat, but now I\u2019m itching to hitch a ride on an ice breaker, wrangle up some reindeer, and embark upon that great milky abyss, the Arctic circle. \u2014<strong>Mackenzie Beer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I just saw the documentary <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.magpictures.com\/pageone\/\">Page One<\/a><\/em>, which was described to me as an \u201cinside look at the production of <em>The New York Times<\/em>.\u201d Really, it\u2019s more of a riveting love letter to journalism. David Carr, the media columnist on whom the film focuses, is humorous, gritty, and lovable\u2014exactly my idea of the perfect newspaperman. \u2014<strong>Sophie Haigney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The winners of this year\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulwer-lytton.com\/\">Bulwer-Lytton <\/a>bad-sentence contest outdid themselves. My favorite: \u201cAs I stood among the ransacked ruin that had been my home, surveying the aftermath of the senseless horrors and atrocities that had been perpetrated on my family and everything I hold dear, I swore to myself that no matter where I had to go, no matter what I had to do or endure, I would find the man who did this . . . and when I did, when I did, oh, there would be words.\u201d\u00a0\u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of John Berger\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bentos-Sketchbook-John-Berger\/dp\/1844676846\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1311953195&amp;sr=1-1\">Bento\u2019s Sketchbook<\/a><\/em>, I\u2019ve been paging through\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Send-You-this-Cadmium-Red\/dp\/8495273322\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1311953217&amp;sr=1-1\">I Send You This Cadmium Red<\/a><\/em>, a book of correspondence between Berger and the artist John Christie. Their first letter is a painted square of color\u2014the eponymous color, of course\u2014which leads them to exchanges on everything from the blue of Yves Klein to the blue of Matisse. The accumulation is a monument to friendship, art, and the art of letter writing. \u2014<strong>Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Continuum took two things that I love\u2014music writing and books that \u00a0fit in my back pocket\u2014and put them together to make a series that is my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.continuumbooks.com\/series\/browse.aspx?SeriesId=2101\">favorite thing ever<\/a>. I plan to get through all eighty-three\u00a0books, each of which contains a critical discussion of one classic album. Up first for me was Nas\u2019s\u00a0<em>Illmatic<\/em>. Up next? Maybe My Bloody Valentine\u2019s\u00a0<em>Loveless<\/em>. Or Neutral Milk Hotel\u2019s\u00a0<em>In the Aeroplane over the Sea<\/em>. \u2014<strong>Cody Wiewandt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If book reviews\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2299346\/pagenum\/all\" target=\"_blank\">could kill<\/a>. <em>Slate<\/em> has three golden rules for reviewing.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Ali Pechman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just in case anyone forgot, Splitsider reminds us of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/splitsider.com\/2011\/07\/the-sexual-proclivities-of-friends\">sexual shenanigans<\/a> on\u00a0<em>Friends. <\/em>\u2014<strong>C.
