Jameson also makes some helpful distinctions between SF and fantasy, to the detriment of the latter (a nice antidote to Harry Potter mania). It has brought back memories of many childhood afternoons spent reading Asimov, Le Guin, and Frank Herbert\u2014books I thought I\u2019d forgotten but am happy to rediscover. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been fully immersed in Sheila McClear\u2019s memoir\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Last-Live-Nude-Girls-Memoir\/dp\/1593764006\">The Last of the Live Nude Girls<\/a><\/em>, about her time spent working in a Times Square peep show<em>\u2014<\/em>eye-opening, gritty, and compelling. \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>The theme of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laphamsquarterly.org\/magazine\/food.php\" target=\"_blank\">the summer issue of <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laphamsquarterly.org\/magazine\/food.php\" target=\"_blank\">Lapham\u2019s Quarterly<\/a><\/em> is food, and by golly is it delicious! A taste of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laphamsquarterly.org\/voices-in-time\/table-decoration.php\" target=\"_blank\">the issue\u2019s\u00a0excerpt from Vasari\u2019s <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laphamsquarterly.org\/voices-in-time\/table-decoration.php\" target=\"_blank\">Lives of the Painters, Sculptors, and Architects<\/a><\/em>: \u201cAndrea presented an octagonal church like San Giovanni, but resting on columns. The pavement was formed of jelly, resembling a variously colored mosaic; the columns, which looked like porphyry, were large sausages; the bases and capitals Parmesan cheese; the cornices were made of pastry and sugar, and the tribunes of quarters of marzipan. In the middle was a choir desk made of cold veal, with a book of lasagna, the letters and notes being formed of peppercorns.\u201d<strong> \u2014<strong>Clare Fentress<\/strong><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Inspired by a book-cover painting by Leanne Shapton, I\u2019ve been reading a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thessaly\/5939379633\/\">vintage Penguin edition<\/a> of <em>Bonjour Tristesse<\/em>. If I can\u2019t be in the south of France &#8230; \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m contributing from the <a href=\"http:\/\/htmlgiant.com\/random\/innovative-residency-underway\/\">Palovista Ranch<\/a> this week,\u00a0where I\u2019ve been writing but also rereading one of my favorite novels,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blood-Meridian-Evening-Redness-West\/dp\/0679728759\/\">Blood Meridian<\/a><\/em> and, for the first time,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Suttree-Cormac-McCarthy\/dp\/0679736328\/\">Suttree<\/a><\/em>. As expected, Cormac McCarthy is the perfect companion for long walks around the desert. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you get a chance to see the documentary\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/movies?hl=en&amp;near=New+York,+NY&amp;dq=sholem+aleichem:+laughing+in+the+darkness&amp;sort=1&amp;mid=2ea06f6fba2b98bf&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=_WAgTorGHsTVgQf1o-XjBQ&amp;ved=0CB8QwAMoAg\">Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness<\/a><\/em>, be sure to: it\u2019s not just a portrait of the iconic Yiddish writer but also of a lost world. I found it deeply moving. \u2014<strong>S. S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dani Shapiro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/17\/books\/review\/the-me-my-child-mustnt-know.html\">on the difference<\/a> having a child has on a memoirist: \u201cAfter all, one can\u2019t write with abandon if one is worrying about the consequences. And to have children is to always, always worry about the consequences.\u201d \u2014<strong>T.
