Why did it take me so long? His latest work to be translated into English, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Truth-about-Marie-French-Literature\/dp\/1564783677\">The Truth About Marie<\/a><\/em>, is haunting, clever, funny. I can\u2019t wait to read more &#8230; as soon as I finish <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Harriet-Spy-Louise-Fitzhugh\/dp\/0440416795\/\">Harriet the Spy<\/a><\/em>. Where was <em>she<\/em> all my life? \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I saw a really interesting film recently:\u00a0<em>The Target<\/em>, which was cowritten by Vladimir Sorokin. It&#8217;s a strange mix of\u00a0<em>Anna Karenina<\/em>, sci-fi, and social commentary, but it works. Light viewing it&#8217;s not, but if you&#8217;re in the mood to stomach a dystopia in which love is a soulless illusion, it&#8217;s worth seeking out!\u00a0\u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, I\u2019m going to see <em>Le Rayon Vert<\/em>\u2014back at Film Forum by popular demand. \u2014<strong>L. S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This weekend, I\u2019m reading Rebecca Wolff&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beginners-Rebecca-Wolff\/dp\/1594487995\">The Beginners<\/a><\/em>, a debut novel about a fifteen-year-old girl who befriends a new couple in town, the Motherwells. The Motherwells say they\u2019ve moved to Wick, Massachusetts, to study the town\u2019s history of witchcraft, but from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookforum.com\/review\/7982\">reviews<\/a>, it sounds like spookier things start to happen. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though Monday is Independence Day, today is the ninetieth anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. Check out one of my favorite contemporary Chinese short-story collections, the irreverent and absurd <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143113275\/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_i=0231136943&amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_r=0VHKASA2TGWJMSE3XSMG\" target=\"_blank\"><em>I Love Dollars<\/em><\/a> by Zhu Wen. \u2014<strong>Ali Pechman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was happy to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/articles\/archives\/2011\/jul\/14\/variety-movie-experience\/\">this article<\/a> in <em>The New York Review of Books<\/em> on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0478304\/\">The Tree of Life<\/a><\/em>\u2014a much-needed break from all the hipster hate I\u2019ve encountered toward Malick\u2019s most recent film &#8230; a film that, yes, I loved. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m in a New York City-themed book club, and our latest meeting had me rereading\u00a0<em>The Age of Innocence.<\/em> Of course it\u2019s terrific\u2014but I\u2019d forgotten how truly\u00a0<em>fun<\/em> a read it is. \u2014<strong>S.
