(Come back, Louisa! We\u2019ll quit our honky-tonking and running around, if you\u2019ll just come back and keep writing the way you do.) \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t usually laugh out loud when I read, but Iris Owens\u2019s alternately hilarious and appalling <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/After-Claude-Review-Books-Classics\/dp\/1590173635\">After Claude<\/a><\/em> was getting me strange looks on the A train. Incidentally, it\u2019s one of the great NYC summer books, too. \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I picked up the charming <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weeds-Defense-Natures-Unloved-Plants\/dp\/0062065459\">Weeds<\/a><\/em> by Richard Mabey, who suggests that our definition of the word is far more subjective and cultural than we would like to think. The book is sprinkled with entertaining anecdotes, like this one about the eminent rosarian Humphrey Brook, who became slightly\u00a0belligerent\u00a0after a few pints of beer at a local pub: \u201cOn the way back we passed a suburban garden where the owner was picking modern shrub roses whose shades were a farrago of Day-Glo reds and oranges. Humphrey stopped unsteadily, stared at the scene much as one might at a junk dealer gluing Formica onto a Chippendale table, and screamed \u2018Vegetable rats!\u2019 at the hapless grower.\u201d \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/06\/a-week-in-culture-chris-weitz-director\/\">Chris Weitz<\/a>\u2019s new movie,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/movies?hl=en&amp;near=New+York,+NY&amp;dq=a+better+life&amp;sort=1&amp;mid=461584406a942317&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=i9METtHEFKXc0QHAgqDWCw&amp;ved=0CCgQwAMoCA\">A Better Life<\/a><\/em>, opens this weekend in New York at Lincoln Center and the Sunshine. I\u2019ve heard a lot about the film, and it\u2019s not clear how long it will run\u2014I\u2019m not taking any chances. <strong>\u2014<strong>L. S.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dalkeyarchive.com\/book\/?GCOI=15647100372530\">I love you, Victor Shklovsky<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/20\/business\/media\/20onion.html\">Why shouldn\u2019t <em>The Onion<\/em> win a Pulitzer<\/a>? \u2014<strong>Cody Wiewandt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel hypnotized, and also slightly agitated, when I watch these <a href=\"http:\/\/streetbonersandtvcarnage.com\/blog\/boners-in-motion-the-one-minute-series-by-dennis-swiatkowski\/ \">one-minute films<\/a> of \u201cbeautiful young people &#8230; standing around looking beautiful\u201d by Dennis Swiatkowski. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d been waiting for Ben Loory\u2019s first collection of stories, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Stories-Nighttime-Some-Day-Loory\/dp\/0143119508\">Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day<\/a><\/em>, ever since I read \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/features\/2010\/04\/12\/100412fi_fiction_loory\">The T.V.<\/a>\u201d Just one question: which stories were meant for nighttime and which for daytime? \u2014<strong>Ali Pechman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A wonderful visit to Chicago\u2019s Shedd Aquarium last week got me hankering for Jeffrey Yang\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Aquarium-Poems-Jeffrey-Yang\/dp\/1555975135\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1308856931&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Aquarium<\/a><\/em>. I like this 2008 poetry collection and abecedary because reading it is sort of like watching\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5sBDGhtfk4s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blue blubber jellies bounce around inside a light-up tank<\/a>. \u2014<strong>Clare Fentress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/entertainment\/2011\/06\/kreayshawn.html\">Kreayshawn<\/a> is, now you know.<strong> \u2014<strong>C.
