More often, we wind up with a mix somewhere between that of a cabinet of curiosities and a Little Free Library stocked by an indecisive grad student; in the past few weeks, for example, in addition to Benjamin Moser\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2026\/09\/22\/plan-b-is-extremely-dangerous-benjamin-moser-on-anti-zionism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Tom Overton\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2026\/09\/24\/john-berger-deaths-secretary-a-conversation-with-tom-overton\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Berger: From Life<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we found a copy of the agent Ari Emanuel\u2019s memoir, the comedian Ms. Pat\u2019s memoir, a history of the doctor thought to be the real-life inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, and a collection of personal essays on gynecological health. While combing through these galleys for good ideas or good writing, we sometimes save passages we like. Here are a few from September and October.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Tarpley Hitt, online editor, and Emma Eaton, editorial intern<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the opening words of a new release by the author Helle Helle, translated from the Danish by Martin Aiken. The book is titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndbooks.com\/book\/hafni-says\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hafni Says<\/span><\/i><\/a> (New Directions)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that she\u2019s getting divorced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia Lockwood\u2019s new collection, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/828570\/agate-head--stone-soup-by-patricia-lockwood\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agate Head \/ Stone Soup<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Penguin Books), is all geology, cutting, and interiors. She\u2019s taken up lapidary and given up her phone, and in the introduction, she writes that she has started to notice things again. One poem, \u201cForged in Fire,\u201d is about a metalworking-game-show contestant whom Lockwood developed a big crush on:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He lived in a trailer in the crystal<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilderness, on the edge of a lake<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And underneath wheeling eagles.<br \/>\n<\/span>There was no ceiling on him.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He looked like a chainsaw carving<br \/>\n<\/span>Of something falling through high air.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolfo Bioy Casares\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/morel-s-invention\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morel\u2019s Invention<\/span><\/i><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(NYRB)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, newly translated from the Spanish by Margaret Jull Costa, is a tight, Surrealist mystery novella set on an island. It was the source for the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Year at Marienbad <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1961)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From the foreword by Borges:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having discussed the details of his plot with the author, and having reread the book, I believe it would be neither inaccurate nor hyperbolic to describe it as perfect.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monica Nelson\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artbook.com\/9781733622073.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These Long Shadows: Women\u2019s House Museums in the American South<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Atelier \u00c9ditions) is a visual history of fourteen houses and their fourteen female inhabitants\u2014a list that includes the authors Flannery O\u2019Connor, Eudora Welty, and Margaret Mitchell; the reporter Ida B. Wells; the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low; and the singer Nina Simone. There are many different possible titles, we are told at the beginning. \u201cHow to Kill Cockroaches\u201d is one. You use sugar, flour, and gypsum. But the cockroaches keep repeating through the story, as does the narrator complaining about cockroaches. The cockroaches belonged to the ground floor and scurried up the pipe. You have to poison cockroaches in cycles, a friend wrote me, right when I began taking notes for this project, years ago. At least three cycles of them. Once they die there are still more waiting to hatch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a less grim encounter with the natural world, you might try Aya K<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u014d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">da\u2019s essay collection <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/tree-aya-koda?variant=44778259546146\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tree: My Encounters with Trees<\/span><\/i><\/a> (HarperOne)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, first published posthumously in 1992, and now appearing in English for the first time, translated from the Japanese by Charlotte Goff. This book, which makes a cameo in Wim Wenders\u2019s film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfect Days<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a kind of arboreal travelogue of K<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u014d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">da\u2019s visits to some of Japan\u2019s most notable trees, written as though she is ringing up an old friend:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year I had the chance to meet the legendary Jomon Sugi, and what a year it was for me \u2026 It is true, of course, that there\u2019s no risk of trees being out when you call, so in that sense it is easy enough if you just decide to pay a visit.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, after explaining that the Jomon Sugi tree lives on an island called Yakushima, known for having \u201c20,000 deer, 20,000 monkeys, and 20,000 people,\u201d she writes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the cedars on Yakushima are given the name Yakusugi, from the first characters of the island combined with sugi, the variety of cedar tree. This name is reserved for sugi trees over a thousand years old, whilst those under a thousand are known as &#8216;little cedars&#8217;.
