Each week,\u00a0<\/em>The Paris Review unlocks stories, poems, and interviews from our archive for our readers. This week, we\u2019ve unlocked Gary Indiana\u2019s\u00a0Art of Fiction<\/a>\u00a0interview, selected from the archive by Natalie Shapero, whose poem \u201cThe Top of Hell<\/a>\u201d appears in our new\u00a0Fall issue<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tobi Haslett\u2019s prefatory note to Gary Indiana\u2019s\u00a0Art of Fiction<\/a>\u00a0interview, published in issue no. 238 of the\u00a0Review<\/em>, mentions the very large number of books lining the walls of Indiana\u2019s New York City apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore books,\u201d Haslett observes, \u201care always arriving.\u201d Three years later, following Indiana\u2019s passing in 2024, this impressive and assuredly eclectic book collection was boxed up and shipped across the country to a planned library site in Altadena, California, where, on arrival, it was promptly incinerated in its entirety by the Eaton Fire.<\/p>\n

So the books are now gone. But we still have documents like this one, a sharp and wide-ranging look into a wild mind. Beginning with a discussion of Indiana\u2019s on-screen performances\u2014screaming in a bathrobe in Valie Export\u2019s\u00a0The Practice of Love<\/em>, screaming on a train while being shot with a machine gun in Christoph Schlingensief\u2019s\u00a0Terror<\/em>\u2014the interview winds its way through Indiana\u2019s life and work as he changes cities, influences, and art forms. I\u2019m a big admirer of\u00a0Vile Days<\/em>, the compendium of Indiana\u2019s\u00a0Village Voice<\/em>\u00a0columns from his time as an art critic\u2014I highly recommend the piece in there on the quintessentially eighties spending frenzy at a Warhol auction\u2014and I appreciate how this interview illuminates the throughline from that mode of Indiana\u2019s writing to his work as a novelist. I\u2019m also grateful for Indiana\u2019s reflections here on trauma and the evaporation of trust, survival and the perils of nostalgia, and the necessity of distinguishing between attitude and action. \u201cHaving a million opinions about everything comes cheap and easy,\u201d Indiana tells Haslett, \u201cwhereas actually doing something can cost you quite a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Did you know that you wanted to be a novelist when you were writing for the\u00a0Voice<\/em>?<\/p>\n

INDIANA<\/p>\n

I was desperate to write a novel, but I didn\u2019t have a story. Whenever I tried to write fiction it was all about my own inner bullshit. Writing about films and architecture and books was never the end point of what I wanted to do, but it forced me to get outside my own head, to describe physical objects and action. And then somebody handed me a story. I fell in love with a very comely young man who was trying to be an artist and was being a junkie without trying at all. I didn\u2019t understand him, I didn\u2019t understand his behavior, and I didn\u2019t understand my behavior either. Francesco Clemente told me once that when you\u2019re in love, the economy goes out the window. And that was my experience\u2014he was all-consuming to me. A lot of what\u2019s in\u00a0Horse Crazy<\/em>\u00a0is pretty much how it went.<\/p>\n
