{"id":171278,"date":"2025-07-28T11:19:44","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T15:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=171278"},"modified":"2025-07-28T17:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T21:18:11","slug":"ten-questions-for-joy-williams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2025\/07\/28\/ten-questions-for-joy-williams\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten Questions for Joy Williams"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_171319\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171319\" class=\"wp-image-171319 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/joy-will.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/joy-will.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/joy-will-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-171319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>WITH ROBERT STONE IN KEY WEST, CA. 1995.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cForgive me for the things I have done and for the things I have left undone,\u201d Joy Williams said in 2014, in her <\/em>Paris Review <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6303\/the-art-of-fiction-no-223-joy-williams\">Art of Fiction<\/a> interview. \u201cI may very well write out of a sense of guilt.\u201d Her new story \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/8410\/after-the-haiku-period-joy-williams\">After the Haiku Period<\/a>,\u201d which appears in the <\/em>Review<em>\u2019s Summer 2025 issue, is a story of guilt askew, which centers on a pair of twins in their sixties, the daughters of a coal-bed-methane-drilling-company tycoon (\u201cWe called Daddy Midas,\u201d one sister says. \u201cEverything he touched turned into some ghastly energy source\u201d) and their devoted \u201csage,\u201d Jimmy, who knows just what to pack for their picnics. Fueled by white wine, lemon squares, and family shame, Camilla and Candida make a pastime of hatching dramatic plots to make the \u201cdestroyers and despoilers and death dealers\u201d pay\u2014until finally, one night, they take the plunge. <\/em><em>Williams\u2014who has published twelve stories in <\/em>The Paris Review<em>, dating back to 1968\u2014is hesitant to talk about craft. (\u201cI do believe there is, in fact, a mystery to the whole enterprise that one dares to investigate at peril,\u201d she said in her interview.) Still, we couldn\u2019t resist sending her a few questions about the mysterious enterprise of this particular story, which she responded to over email.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">THE EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will you tell us about where you\u2019re writing to us from, and set the scene?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">WILLIAMS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The desert, where it\u2019s 110 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did this story begin for you? Was it with an image, a sentence? The names of the twins, perhaps?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">WILLIAMS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was actually a vision of the leeches on a lakeshore\u2014a sizzling chili red and long as baguettes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When did you write the story, and did it come easily? Did you revise it very much, and if so, how did it change?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">WILLIAMS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ladies were floating around in conversation with themselves. Jimmy was a late addition. I really want to thank the fact-checkers at <em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u2014I misstated a conversation between Ratty and Mole in <em>The Wind in the Willows<\/em> and they caught it big-time, as well as the gestation period of the humpback whale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you think of yourself as a writer interested in social class?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">WILLIAMS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thought of two upper-class ladies attacking a slaughterhouse enchanted me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What have you noticed about twins, or about the children of rich people?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">WILLIAMS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know any rich people, or twins, for that matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music comes up a few times in this story\u2014the hope that some melody might change hearts and minds. Is it? Can you tell us about the Slaughter?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">WILLIAMS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post\u2013Civil War, the military and many helpful folk with rifles set out to exterminate the buffalo and other animal life on the plains\u00a0as a means to eliminate the Indians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">EDITORS<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the poet Issa doing in this story?
