From our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/8375\/the-art-of-fiction-no-266-gerald-murnane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MURNANE<br \/>\nNow, see this colored chart? Represented by about twenty-five colored lines is a diagram of my life. Gray is for vagueness. Everything, for me, has to be put in diagram or spatial form. The chart is a means of remembering. \u201c88 River Street South,\u201d that\u2019s my address. Now, there\u2019s when I met my wife. I knew her at teachers\u2019 college a bit. We weren\u2019t interested in each other then. But I met her again at the start of \u201964. \u201cC.L. 1\u201d\u2014that means the first time we went out together, in the middle of \u201964. See there?<\/p>\n<p>INTERVIEWER<br \/>\nYep.<\/p>\n<p>MURNANE<br \/>\nRight. And then all these lines are events in our courtship. And our courtship was a bit rocky. We separated at one time\u2014it was her choice. And then, \u201cEngagement to C.M.L.\u201d All of them from then on are \u201cC.M.L.\u201d \u201cAt Brunswick with C.M.L.\u201d \u201cMarriage to C.M.L.\u201d\u2014then I abandoned the chart.<\/p>\n<p>INTERVIEWER<br \/>\nWhy is that?<\/p>\n<p>MURNANE<br \/>\nLet\u2019s say I\u2019d struggled, as a person, to find out what the whole thing was about, and then I found somebody I was able to talk to, found someone to listen to me.
