Often, we\u2019re struck by particular paragraphs or sentences from the galleys that stack up on our desks and spill over onto our shelves. We often share them with each other on Slack, and we thought, for a change, that we might share them with you. Here are some of the curious, striking, strange, funny, and wonderful bits we found, in books that are coming out this month.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Sophie Haigney, web editor, and Olivia Kan-Sperling, assistant editor<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Antonio di Benedetto\u2019s novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/the-suicides\">The Suicides<\/a>, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">originally published in Spanish in 1969 and newly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">translated by Esther Allen<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(NYRB Books):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaning forward, I scrutinized the photos. Each showed a human body, fully clothed, lying on the ground. \u201cI see that all three are dead,\u201d I said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s not a particularly clever response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could tell the biting tone was a warning. Public domain.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nPeter Szendy\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/products\/3075-for-an-ecology-of-images\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For an Ecology of Images<\/span><\/i><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Verso) discusses \u201ciconomies\u201d of images: picture markets, places where images circulate and compete economically.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes an extended commentary on William Hogarth\u2019s curious 1745 etching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Battle of the Pictures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reproduced above:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scene in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Battle of the Pictures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that of the auction market where one seeks\u2014sometimes in spectacular or acrobatic fashion\u2014the point of equilibrium between offer and proffer, the best price. But, on the other hand, the engraving also asks us to think about something else, through its near disappearance of human agents and its infinite multiplication of images (letting them proliferate until the image\u2019s own vanishing point). It takes us to the limits of the iconomic market and points to what lies beyond and outside it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiley.com\/en-hk\/Equality%3A+What+It+Means+and+Why+It+Matters-p-9781509565504\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Equality<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Polity), an edited conversation between the economist Thomas Piketty and the political philosopher Michael Sandel conducted in May 2024 at the Paris School of Economics, begins with the following remark from Piketty:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me first state that I am optimistic about equality and inequality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Saidiya Hartman\u2019s \u201cCrow Jane Makes a Modest Proposal\u201d in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/five-manifestos-for-the-beautiful-world\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five Manifestos for the Beautiful World<\/span><\/i><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Duke University Press):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the quiet storm, [Jane Crow\u2019s] modest proposal is easy listening, nothing but legible speech without any discordant tones or ugly feelings; it is assimilable, digestible, delectable as good negroes are wont to be. \u2026 No <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fuck it, no burn it down<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, no <em>complete program for disorder<\/em>, no riot, no unrepentant destruction. Just this metaphorical aptitude, this plasticity, this figurative capacity or talent for becoming whatever is required or nobody at all, just the tender gift of reproductive labor <em>in service of<\/em> the order, the embrace of her beautiful humiliation, the betrayal of her volition, the dulcet tones of submission, the vow to wait, to keep waiting and waiting until oblivion, the propensity to endure until hardly any of us are left standing, just the appeal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">father may I, master may I, man may I <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Lyndsy Spence\u2019s biography of Vivien Leigh, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Where-Madness-Lies\/Lyndsy-Spence\/9781639368051\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where Madness Lies<\/span><\/i><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Pegasus Books):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Oh, the bliss of not having to go mad, commit suicide, or contemplate murder,&#8217; Vivien Leigh told the waiting reporters as she stepped off the aeroplane and on to the airfield in Colombo, Ceylon. \u2026 She was exhausted after the long flight by way of London, Rome, Beirut, Bahrain and Bombay. Her leading man, Peter Finch, took her by the arm and escorted her through the sea of reporters and curious faces who hoped to catch a glimpse of the star. The humidity was suffocating and the heat swept over her like a furnace. She stopped to catch her breath, before adding, &#8216;My character is &#8230; a normal healthy
