In one of Sophie Calle\u2019s first artistic experiments, she invited twenty-seven friends, acquaintances, and strangers to sleep in her bed. She photographed them awake and asleep, secretly recording any private conversation once the door closed. She served each a meal, and, if they agreed, subjected them to a questionnaire that probed their personal predilections, habits, and dreams. The following text is Calle\u2019s narrative report of her sixth and seventh guests\u2019 stay, and is the fourth and final in a series of excerpts from the project to be published this week on the<\/i> Daily.\u00a0Previous installments: \u201cThird Sleeper<\/a>,\u201d \u201cFourth Sleeper<\/a>,\u201d and \u201cFifth Sleeper<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I do not know Graziella Rampacci. Fran\u00e7oise Jourdan-Gassin gave me her telephone number. She immediately agrees to sleep without asking for any more details. She will come Tuesday, April 3, from midnight to 8 A.M.<\/small><\/p>\n

I know Fran\u00e7oise Jourdan-Gassin. She had declined to participate. She simply came to accompany Graziella Rampacci whom she\u2019d recommended I invite. She decides at the last minute to share the night with her friend.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tuesday, April 3, at midnight, they take over for G\u00e9rard Maillet. Fran\u00e7oise says to Graziella, \u201cWhat if I slept with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

G: Oh! That would be wonderful!<\/p>\n

F: Are you inviting me?<\/p>\n

G: I\u2019m inviting you. This will be my first time sleeping with you. Bizarre, considering how long we\u2019ve known each other.<\/p>\n

F: To know someone for eight years and never sleep together.<\/p>\n

G: I\u2019ve wanted to for so long, Fran\u00e7oise.<\/p>\n

Then we leave the bedroom. They wait for G\u00e9rard to come out, dressed in my father\u2019s robe, before they get settled. They change the sheets. Graziella brought red pajamas with a jabot collar. I serve them a glass of champagne. I leave.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Listening to the tape, I hear:<\/em><\/p>\n

F: A nice welcome!<\/p>\n

G: This will be great!<\/p>\n

F: Can I air out the bedroom? It smells like sweat!<\/p>\n

I understand from the sounds and silences that they\u2019re moving between the bathroom and the bedroom. The bed must be empty.<\/p>\n

G: Do you like my pajamas?<\/p>\n

F (with a whistle of admiration): You don\u2019t sleep in just anything!<\/p>\n

I enter. Graziella asks for sunglasses. I propose they answer a few questions.<\/p>\n

Names, ages, professions?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Graziella Rampacci. I\u2019m twenty-seven years old. I was born in Nice. I make dresses. I like to read, I like to come here, I like to act. It would be better if I slept less\u2014I could read more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Fran\u00e7oise Jourdan-Gassin. I\u2019m a painter. Twenty-five years old.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do they have any requirements at night?<\/em><\/p>\n

F: Just a clean bed.<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7oise is a light sleeper, Graziella is a heavy sleeper.<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7oise talks in her sleep, Graziella doesn\u2019t talk.<\/p>\n

What they have in common: Sleep is a source of pleasure for them both. They can sleep while a stranger watches, in a bed situated in the middle of the room. They are disgusted by the idea of sleeping in sheets used by someone else. They like to sleep alone. Graziella can\u2019t stand it when a partner jumps her as soon as they get into bed.<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7oise is faithful to her bed. Graziella sleeps anywhere, anytime. When she agreed to come sleep here, she thought that the experience would last eight days, eight days in the bed.<\/p>\n

I leave the room for a brief moment.<\/p>\n

Listening to the tape, I hear:<\/em><\/p>\n

G: I love this questionnaire.<\/p>\n

F (in a whisper): I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014<\/p>\n

She must have noticed that the recorder was on because she goes quiet. G\u00e9rard enters. He\u2019s looking for his boots. He asks the two women whether he\u2019s disturbing them. They say no, not at all. He would like to witness the interview, without saying anything. They answer that they have nothing to hide. I return.<\/p>\n

Have they ever participated in a similar experiment?<\/em><\/p>\n

F: No.<\/p>\n

G: I\u2019ve slept in strangers\u2019 homes. Apart from the structure, the feeling is the same.<\/p>\n

Do they consider the act of sleeping a job?<\/em><\/p>\n

F: Yes, I promised. I have to do it. It\u2019s a job.<\/p>\n

G: What we\u2019re doing tonight, I find it enjoyable, so it\u2019s more like a game.<\/p>\n

Do they consider it an artistic act?<\/em><\/p>\n

G: No.<\/p>\n

F: Yes.<\/p>\n

Can they recount some memories of sleep?<\/em><\/p>\n

Graziella tells me about a nightmare from five or six years ago. She was surrounded by her father, her mother, her sister. Spiders with human heads sat on her shoulder. They spoke in her ear. A language of onomatopoeias. Their heads were big on one side, flattened on the other. This nightmare never recurred, but it haunts her. Then she tells me about a dream. A boy she knows undressed then removed his skin. Inside, there was fire.<\/p>\n

What do they think of their predecessor?<\/em> (He leaves in a hurry.)<\/p>\n

F: I find him charming.<\/p>\n

G: I don\u2019t think anything. (He returns.)<\/p>\n

What are their motives for agreeing to come?<\/em><\/p>\n

G: I like to meet new people. I\u2019ll gladly leave the house for that.<\/p>\n

F: At first, I didn\u2019t want to. I changed my mind, for no real reason, on the way. I was here; it was easy.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t regret coming. They are happy to be together. For their breakfast, they want tea and toast.<\/p>\n

At two in the morning, G\u00e9rard takes his leave. I photograph them during the night at regular intervals. Graziella changes position each time I take a photo but doesn\u2019t open her eyes. Fran\u00e7oise is nestled at the end of the bed, in darkness.<\/p>\n

7:30 A.M.<\/small> I wake them up. I bring them breakfast. They complain\u2014it\u2019s too early. They would like to listen to Bizet\u2019s Carmen<\/em>. They are silent.<\/p>\n

At eight, they welcome Henri-Alexis Baatsch, in charge of the next shift. Graziella doesn\u2019t know him; Fran\u00e7oise had already met him. After brief introductions, he leaves the bedroom so they can get up. They take a bath before they go. At 8:30 A.M.<\/small>, I walk them to the door. I thank them for coming to sleep.<\/p>\n
