Shot in LA in the mid-sixties, <em>Faces<\/em> is a movie about sex, booze, and aging\u2014or, you might just as well say, about the faces of John Marley, Lynn Carlin, Seymour Cassel, and Gena Rowlands. It is absolutely sad, absolutely tender, and absolutely unsentimental. You won\u2019t cry, and for days you won\u2019t be able to get it out of your head. Not, at least, by reading <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pumpkin-Eater-Review-Books-Classics\/dp\/1590173821\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1307721454&amp;sr=8-1\">The Pumpkin Eater<\/a><\/em> (1962), Penelope Mortimer\u2019s fictional account of her marriage to Rumpole creator John Mortimer: \u201cWe didn\u2019t love each other as most people love: and yet the moment I have said that I think of the men and women I have seen clasped together with eyes full of loathing, men and women who murder each other with all the weapons of devotion.\u201d \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been enjoying Caroline Preston\u2019s ingenious <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/books\/Scrapbook-Frankie-Pratt-Caroline-Preston\/?isbn=9780061966903\">The Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt<\/a><\/em>, a novel made up entirely of vintage images. It\u2019s nifty and fun\u2014but the plot moves along, too! \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Man-Gray-Flannel-Skirt\/dp\/1400068118\">Jon-Jon Goulian on Robert Silvers<\/a>, venerable founding editor of\u00a0<em>The New York Review of Books<\/em>: \u201cA man who can field a call like that with such composure is a man, you might say, whose head is still full of marbles, and yet that would leave open the possibility, inconceivable to me, that Bob might one day lose a few. That leaves only one alternative: Bob\u2019s head contains\u00a0<em>one giant marble<\/em>, one only, and you will have to behead him to make him give it up.\u201d<strong> \u2014<strong>L. S.<\/strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maybe the summer is provoking more wanderlust in me than usual, because this week I read two novels about runaways. First up was Robert Walser\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jakob-Gunten-York-Review-Books\/dp\/0940322218\/\">Jakob von Gunten<\/a><\/em>. I moved on to Denis Johnson\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Angels-Novel-Denis-Johnson\/dp\/0060988827\/\">Angels<\/a><\/em>. Reading it late at night in the immensely humid heat and borderline-nonexistent light of my tiny bedroom seemed to underscore every bizarre and frightening episode of Johnson\u2019s book. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prior to reading Terry Castle\u2019s collection <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Professor-Sentimental-Education-Terry-Castle\/dp\/0061670928\/\">The Professor: A Sentimental Education<\/a><\/em>, I was only familiar with her jaw-dropping Sontag reminiscences\u2014but I\u2019m sorry it took me so long: all her essays are that funny, pithy, and unexpected<strong>. \u2014<strong>S. S.<\/strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wesley Yang\u2019s remarkable <em>n+1<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Face-Seung-Hui-Kindle-Single-ebook\/dp\/B005405VSC\/ref=sr_1_64?s=digital-text&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1307648166&amp;sr=1-64\">essay<\/a> about Seung-Hui Cho, the shooter at the Virginia Tech massacre, is now available as a Kindle single. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the lighter side, I recommend our Southern editor, John Jeremiah Sullivan, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/12\/magazine\/a-rough-guide-to-disney-world.html\">how to survive Disney World<\/a>\u2014minus the fear and loathing. \u2014<strong>L. S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgrounds.com\/portal\/view\/571422\">A George Plimpton video game<\/a>? \u2014<strong>T.
