We especially liked the eerie litany of woebegone objects in \u201cRice in the Spoon\u201d: \u201cSea glass beached \/ on a porch bench\u201d or, better yet, \u201cA brown bust \/ of a sad man.\u201d\u00a0Whether Jethro Tull\u2019s <\/em>Aqualung<em> is or is not a classic is a question Share\u2019s readers are left to settle for themselves.<\/em> \u2014Dan Chiasson<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>THE CREW CHANGE<\/p>\n<p>Hobo, Bono, bone heap.<br \/> I mutilate dandelions in the sun,<br \/> rattle my rake like a saber<\/p>\n<p>When Michelle-my-neighbor,<br \/> over compost, opines<br \/> that <em>Aqualung<\/em>\u2019s a classic;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least I think so.  U2?\u201d<br \/> Does she mean: me, too?<br \/> In the foul rag and compost pile<\/p>\n<p>Of my creaky abdomen I rustle<br \/> all the leaves of my locomotive breath<br \/> to agree because anything you say,<\/p>\n<p>Michelle, must be so!  We live<br \/> in a time of need.  Your hair always<br \/> looks brushed.  Our conversations<\/p>\n<p>Are abrupt.  And yet &#8230;<br \/> The children grow and play over time<br \/> like centipedes behind our sofas;<\/p>\n<p>The tools I never use seem<br \/> delightful on their pegs in the shed,<br \/> like the hopes I sharpened<\/p>\n<p>Once beside the gleaming rails<br \/> as a schoolboy, a hiker, a little hobo never<br \/> far from someone\u2019s back yard trampoline.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>RICE IN THE SPOON<\/p>\n<p>Each in his house,<br \/> thinking of the key,<\/p>\n<p>the locks, the windows,<br \/> doors, and roof.<\/p>\n<p>In my sleep I lift<br \/> a finger. I see &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>opposing blocks,<br \/> like Legos, in painful<\/p>\n<p>composure of modes,<br \/> not moods.<\/p>\n<p>Fake red feathers<br \/> fluffed in a spotted vase.<\/p>\n<p>Sea glass beached<br \/> on a porch bench.<\/p>\n<p>A brown bust<br \/> of a sad man.<\/p>\n<p>A huge tin pitcher,<br \/> parched for years.<\/p>\n<p>Rice glued to<br \/> a badly washed spoon.<\/p>\n<p>Even the dust<br \/> quit moving to settle.<\/p>\n<p>Even the snow is<br \/> a qualm, a sea.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Don Share is Senior Editor of <\/em>Poetry<em> magazine.
