There\u2019s something about cars, and driving culture at large, that\u2019s never wholly agreed with me. Even now, when an Infiniti cuts me off on the freeway, I\u2019m tempted to ram it in the name of eternity and of all language art.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Olivia Sokolowski\u2019s racy poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8008\/lover-of-cars-olivia-sokolowski\">Lover of Cars<\/a>,\u201d published in the new Fall issue of the <em>Review<\/em>, came to me as a revelation\u2014a revved-up paean to \u201call those Stingers Jaguars Tiguans Fiat 500s \/ and San Remo Green Beemer i4s\u201d in the showroom of the author\u2019s imagination:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I want to wrap<\/p>\n<p>my face tight with a silk scarf and spiral\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 down<\/p>\n<p>a Cinque Terre highway in an Alfa Romeo<\/p>\n<p>the color of my innerlip\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I want to slip deep as a splinter<\/p>\n<p>in a black Countach<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What I love most about this swerving verse is how Sokolowski taps the brakes on her own autoerotic fantasy (\u201cbut that\u2019s for when I graduate \/\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0from Honda Girl\u201d). \u201cLover of Cars\u201d made me wonder if the same hapless instructor at Hinsdale Central taught us both driver\u2019s ed and sex ed for a good reason\u2014the point of each course being to prevent a life-altering accident.<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about how \u201cLover of Cars\u201d came down the assembly line in this month\u2019s Making of a Poem; it makes me wish Infiniti or Honda would name a vehicle after Sokolowski\u2019s poetic alter ego, Olivia+. In fact, any number of our Fall issue contributors could have an automobile named in their honor. The Bei Dao would make a revolutionary electric vehicle; we hope you\u2019ll feel as transported as we were by our extended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8009\/from-sidetracks-bei-dao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excerpt<\/a> from the author\u2019s long-awaited poetic autobiography, propulsively translated from the Chinese by Jeffrey Yang. And it\u2019s easy to imagine packing the family into a Jolanda Insana for a long weekend; as the late poet writes, in Catherine Theis\u2019s plucky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8007\/noose-soaked-in-orange-blossom-water-jolanda-insana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">translation<\/a> from the Italian, \u201cthe streets of the sublime are endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8004\/flip-side-monica-de-la-torre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">de la Torre<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8005\/aubade-yuki-tanaka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanaka<\/a>, too, sound like high-performance vehicles. Not that all poems have to be GTI. Nora Claire Miller\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8002\/rumor-nora-claire-miller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rumor<\/a>\u201d is more likely to derail you, while Katana Smith\u2019s poetic still life \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8006\/-nothing-happens-katana-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&amp; Nothing Happens<\/a>\u201d stops time altogether; D.\u00a0A. Powell\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/8003\/as-for-what-the-rain-can-do-d-a-powell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As for What the Rain Can Do<\/a>\u201d shows how poetry and weather can \u201cturn on a dime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the risk of driving my extended metaphor too far, I can\u2019t resist ending with a little story about poetry and cars. The Ford Motor Company once invited Marianne Moore to float possible names for a new sedan. Ford ultimately rejected all of Moore\u2019s suggestions tout court, including the Bullet Lavolta, the Intelligent Whale, the Mongoose Civique, and the Utopian Turtletop, but I\u2019d take any of her recommendations over the marketing department\u2019s choice: the Edsel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Srikanth Reddy is the\u00a0<\/em>Review<em>&#8216;s poetry
