These explanations often sound a bit mystical, occasionally even mystifying. So I was amused to read the opening lines of Dobby Gibson\u2019s tongue-in-cheek \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=398b4d6473&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3D398b4d6473%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw34qK7ey4Aw2bKea3AFOW9S\">Small Craft Talk<\/a>,\u201d a poem our readers discovered in a box of paper slush, and which you\u2019ll find in our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=f47147c0ef&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3Df47147c0ef%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2tW-0-4KRtxlqePaN4tgNV\">Spring issue<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In some languages the word for dream<br \/>\nis the same as for music<\/p>\n<p>is the kind of thing poets like to say<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before you know it, Gibson\u2019s takedown of writing-program clich\u00e9s shades into a wonder at how poems can make us feel ourselves, as Wallace Stevens once put it, \u201cmore truly and more strange\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>as if you\u2019re hearing the song<\/p>\n<p>of your own mind sung into being<br \/>\nso that you become yourself<\/p>\n<p>by becoming more like another self\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I read a poem like Gibson\u2019s, I usually think, Wow, what a great poem. Then, maybe a little bit enviously, I read it again and try to imagine writing it myself. So it was when I first came across the brutalist intimacies of Tracy Fuad\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=57a1f31404&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3D57a1f31404%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0oBZ4b4MGhUMoNXMS1hwwT\">Birth<\/a>,\u201d or Malachi Black\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=8ca01e7415&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3D8ca01e7415%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0PzpVWogQPhWfDrEaNwr2o\">poem<\/a>\u00a0of cosmic epiphanies \u201cin a burned-out Ford sedan\u201d\u2014both of them also in our Spring issue. How did they do that? I wondered, scratching my head. I felt the same amazement reading Joyce Mansour\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=8facdbcab0&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3D8facdbcab0%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0tJdm-PNQdAgEiltYpSAt1\">poem<\/a>, translated by Emilie Moorhouse, which begins \u201cI stole the yellow bird \/ That lives in the devil\u2019s sex,\u201d and which somehow manages to reach from hell to the heavens in nine lines of verse. Whatever could have possessed this cigar-smoking Egyptian Surrealist to go poking around in the devil\u2019s crotch? Maybe it was a late-night game of exquisite corpse with her friend Andr\u00e9 Breton that led to her hilariously abbreviated final lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As for me, my slumber runs along the rooftops<br \/>\nMumbling, waving, making violent love,<br \/>\nWith cats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This spring, for readers who\u2019d like to learn more about how poems like these happen, we\u2019ve launched a new online series, Making of a Poem. Kyra Wilder,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=90ab4741b0&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3D90ab4741b0%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2IlkGHa0jJn5eAw71BSS-u\">writing<\/a>\u00a0about the events that inspired her poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=df76702ac2&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3Ddf76702ac2%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Asn1GL8tgQdMrVdq_wjTm\">John Wick Is So Tired<\/a>,\u201d reveals how that poem very nearly involved a different Hollywood franchise altogether. \u201cI was reading a lot of Ian Fleming that fall,\u201d Wilder writes. \u201cI got pretty obsessed with the fact that he included a recipe for scrambled eggs in a James Bond story \u2026 So, it was either going to be \u2018John Wick Is So Tired\u2019 or \u2018James Bond Could Make You Some Pretty Good Eggs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To accompany the series, we recently published an essay by Matthew Zapruder, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde&amp;id=f1dc681a24&amp;e=e6bc06161b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theparisreview.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db6c161007733f0d4c084f3fde%26id%3Df1dc681a24%26e%3De6bc06161b&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683912769865000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1xjueoel6zkgbM5-C3iss-\">My Royal Quiet Deluxe<\/a>,\u201d from his forthcoming\u00a0<em>Story of a Poem: A Memoir<\/em>, which also illuminates the roundabout, vexing, and yes, occasionally mystical routes that poems take on their way into existence. As a young poet, Zapruder found an old typewriter in his grandparents\u2019 attic and began the hypnotic practice of hammering out whatever poem he was writing over and over again, each version slightly different from the last. \u201cI began not to think about but to hear how necessary each word was or wasn\u2019t: if I skipped something to avoid typing it for the fiftieth or hundredth time, and then when I read it, it sounded fine, I would never look back,\u201d he writes. \u201cI also had a secret, immutable rule. If I ever mistyped a word\u2014<em>horse<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>house<\/em>,\u00a0<em>ward<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>word<\/em>,\u00a0<em>vary<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>very<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>find<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>fine<\/em>\u2014I would have to keep it. It was a pact I made with myself, to trust my unconscious, that what seemed to be an error was actually a sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s to oracular typos and scrambled eggs!
