She and her husband, the German novelist Fred Viebahn, are night owls\u2014emails from Dove often land around 9 <small>A.M.<\/small>, just before bedtime\u2014and they had just spent several long nights poring over her interview, which was conducted by Kevin Young and which spans Dove\u2019s childhood in Akron, Ohio, where her father was the first Black chemist at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company; her adventures with the German language; her experience as poet laureate of the United States, between 1993 and 1995; and her love of ballroom dancing and of sewing, during which she might \u201cfind the solution for an enjambment\u201d halfway through stitching a seam. Working their way through the conversation, she and Viebahn had confirmed or emended the kinds of small but crucial details that are also the material of Dove\u2019s poems: the number of siblings in her father\u2019s family, the color of the book that inspired the poem \u201cParsley,\u201d the name of the German lettering in which her childhood copy of Friedrich Schiller\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Das Lied von der Glocke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was printed (not S\u00fctterlin, it transpired, but Fraktur). We talked through her corrections, and then Dove produced a final fact that caught me by surprise. Two decades ago, she said, she had been preparing to be interviewed for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Paris Review <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by George Plimpton. He\u2019d called to set a date for their first conversation, and the next day, she said, came the shocking news that he had died.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This spring rings in the magazine\u2019s seventieth anniversary, and twenty years since the loss of its visionary longtime editor. To mark the occasion,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/243\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issue no. 243<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a cover created for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Peter Doig\u2014inspired,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2023\/03\/15\/the-review-celebrates-seventy-with-fried-eggs-by-the-canal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he told us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by a birthday card he made for his son Locker\u2014and includes not two but three Writers at Work interviews: with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/7969\/the-art-of-poetry-no-113-rita-dove\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dove<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the American short story writer and novelist<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/7966\/the-art-of-fiction-no-257-mary-gaitskill\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Gaitskill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/7968\/the-art-of-fiction-no-258-olga-tokarczuk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olga Tokarczuk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature. In many ways, though, this issue is consistent with the others in our long history, featuring the best prose, poetry, and art that we could muster, by writers and artists you\u2019ve heard of and some you haven\u2019t.
