It has no place at <em>The Paris Review<\/em>. When Kurt Andersen compiled his list of peeves, he had the excuse of working at <em>New York\u2014<\/em>a magazine that pretty much <em>exists<\/em> to market snootiness on a budget. You will notice that most of his verbotens come from the tabloids, the trades, or lifestyle magazines. (There is something, not just ironic, but <em>deep<\/em> about a lifestyle magazine banning the word <em>lifestyle<\/em>.) Which is to say, Andersen was doing his job. He was maintaining a <em>tone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here at the <em>Review<\/em> we have no such excuse. All we\u2019ve got are hang-ups. I blame mine on <em>The Worth of Words<\/em>, a late-Victorian usage manual that I picked up at a yard sale during high school and subsequently destroyed. It was too late. <em>The Worth of Words<\/em> had singed it onto my brain that the phrase <em>due to<\/em> should be used only in instances of someone actually incurring a debt of gratitude, that <em>aggravate<\/em> must never be used except in the sense of adding to, and that <em>partially<\/em> means only \u201cwith bias.\u201d (Google Books has now <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iWXeBfbNLfgC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=The+Worth+of+Words&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=DPLfTbXDDYO4tgfK_bSMCg&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;ct=result&#038;resnum=1&#038;ved=0CC4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">reunited me with this manual<\/a> and its insane author, Ralcy Halsted Bell. Entry one: \u201cABORTIVE means of untimely birth &#8230; To speak of an abortive attempt or act is hardly short of the ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I do not recommend <em>The Worth of Words<\/em>, and I offer this tiny (partial) list of my own in a spirit of confession and contrition. Recently our managing editor, Nicole Rudick, cured me of an aversion to <em>forthcoming<\/em> (in the sense of \u201csoon to be published\u201d) with the help of the <em>OED<\/em>. Here, off the top of my head, are some more:<\/p>\n<p>Home (for house)<br \/>\n Hopefully (for \u201cI hope\u201d)<br \/>\n Disinterest (for \u201clack of interest\u201d\u2014yes, even though I know it\u2019s totally correct)<br \/>\n Delicious, Spicy, Tangy (used metaphorically)<br \/>\n Tasty (ever, but especially in reference to a \u201click\u201d)<br \/>\n Pleasantry (except in the sense of \u201cjoke\u201d)<br \/>\n Following (to introduce a list: as in \u201cthe following\u201d)<br \/>\n Contact (as a verb)<br \/>\n Relationship (ever, ever, even when it\u2019s the <em>mot juste<\/em>)<br \/>\n Impact (unless we\u2019re talking about, e.g., a car crash)<\/p>\n<p>I could go on. (Couldn\u2019t you?)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><em>Mr. Stein,<\/br><\/p>\n<p>In his new book,<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tao-Travel-Enlightenments-Lives-Road\/dp\/0547336918\">The Tao of Travel<\/a><em>, Paul Theroux suggests ten essential rules for budding globe-trotters. Rule number eight is \u201cRead a novel that has no relation to the place you\u2019re in.\u201d\u00a0This seems counterintuitive, so I would like a second opinion, lest my summer holiday be ruined by inadequate reading material.\u00a0I am making my first trip to the United States in a few weeks (to Los Angeles and San Francisco). Should I be foolish enough to think that reading Bukowski in L.A. will enhance my experience there? Or should I do a complete one-eighty, as Theroux suggests?<br \/>\n Thanks<br \/>\n Darren Colquhoun<br \/>\n Bristol, England<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m with Theroux. To read about a city is always to read about a place that no longer exists. If you go searching for Bukowski\u2019s downtown, you\u2019ll only be disappointed\u2014or will make yourself feel and see things that aren\u2019t there. And so much <em>is<\/em> there.
