To say it\u2019s the best novel I\u2019ve read about a college shortstop would be true, as far as it went, but it\u2019s about more than that: \u201cFor Schwartz this formed the paradox at the heart of baseball, or football, or any other sport. You loved it because you considered it an art: an apparently pointless affair, undertaken by people with a special aptitude, which sidestepped attempts to paraphrase its value yet somehow seemed to communicate something true or even crucial about The Human Condition. The Human Condition being, basically, that we\u2019re alive and have access to beauty, can even erratically create it, but will someday be dead and will not.\u201d \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been reading Jeffrey Toobin\u2019s\u00a0<em>New Yorker <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/05\/30\/110530fa_fact_toobin  \">article<\/a> about New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon with mixed feelings. What Wilpon says about his players makes one wonder if he\u2019s trying to sabotage his own team (which is also mine). Carlos Beltran is overpaid, David Wright is overpraised, Jos\u00e9 Reyes is always injured. These are opinions an owner should keep to himself. But when Wilpon says, \u201cWe\u2019re snakebitten, baby,\u201d he sounds like a true Mets fan to me. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t read any of Diana Athill\u2019s work, I highly recommend\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.persephonebooks.co.uk\/pages\/titles\/index.asp?id=147\">Midsummer Night in the Workhouse<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0a collection of her short fiction recently released by Persephone. Funny, engaging, and unexpected. \u2014<strong>Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I very much enjoyed Francine Prose\u2019s short essay \u201cOther Women\u201d in the new feminist-themed\u00a0<em>Granta<\/em>. Prose was secretly writing her first novel as a graduate student. She joined a feminist\u00a0consciousness-raising group, and, after selling the book, she left her husband and moved to San Francisco. Somehow, she says, she became a feminist. But was it before or after she discovered her husband had slept with nearly every single woman in the group? \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Alexis Madrigal\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2011\/05\/why-are-spy-researchers-building-a-metaphor-program\/239402\/\">piece<\/a> on the Metaphor Program provides a fascinating glimpse at a project a research arm of the government has recently undertaken to develop software that can understand \u201chow a people\u2019s language reveals their mindset.\u201d With the end goal described as a \u201cmachine that can convert a language into underlying truths about a culture,\u201d it sounds like it will be Heidegger\u2019s ultimate technological fear realized: reducing poetry to a resource to be calculated. But is this really possible? It could yield amazing insights and ideas on how different cultures use language; but to control, master, and manipulate those structures is eerie. Aren\u2019t the mysteries of language what help to bring about metaphors in the first place? \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/author\/jsullivan\/\">Southern editor<\/a> alerted me to <a href=\"http:\/\/wonderingminstrels.blogspot.com\/2001\/12\/donal-og-anonymous.html\">this poem<\/a>, translated by Lady Augusta Gregory, and now I can\u2019t get it out of my head. (Sullivan: \u201cWe Irish are the masters of the sob. I give the others everything else, but we get the sob.\u201d) \u2014<strong>L. S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every single sentence of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/time\/20110526\/wl_time\/httpnewsfeedtimecom20110525hownaziscientststriedtocreateanarmyoftalkingdogsxidrssfullworldyahoo \">this article<\/a>\u2014about how Hitler attempted to create an army of talking dogs\u2014blew my mind. \u2014<strong>N.
