Courtesy of Farrar, Straus and Giroux.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could hardly believe my luck in having found her,\u201d Vivian Gornick writes of the persona she created for her pivotal 1987 book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fierce Attachments<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rich, genre-redefining portrayal of fraught maternal bonds that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/06\/26\/books\/best-memoirs.html\">anointed<\/a> the best memoir of the past fifty years. \u201cIt was not only that I admired her style, her generosity, her detachment\u2014such a respite from the me that was me!\u2014she had become the instrument of my illumination.\u201d That shock of wonderment and good fortune is familiar to all Gornick\u2019s readers, and especially to the many writers of nonfiction who still pass around <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Situation and the Story <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2001)\u2014in which those words appear\u2014like a talisman. It\u2019s a thrill to read Gornick\u2019s precise, elegant account of how a voice and a narrative are made, and to see that process so masterfully demonstrated in her own work is often (as she herself has said of reading and rereading the likes of Edmund Gosse or Joan Didion) to become \u201cenraptured.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s in that spirit that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will present Vivian Gornick with the Hadada, our award for lifetime achievement, at our seventieth-anniversary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/spring-revel?mc_cid=0246bf8812&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\">Spring Revel<\/a> on April 4, 2023. Her engrossing Writers at Work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6343\/the-art-of-memoir-no-2-vivian-gornick\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which appeared in issue no. 211 (Winter 2014), was the magazine\u2019s second ever to focus on the art of memoir.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gornick\u2019s exceptional contributions to literature over the past several decades span autobiography, essays, and journalism. Her first book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Search of Ali Mahmoud: An American Woman in Egypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the research and writing of which she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rE5NqHEW0oM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with characteristic \u00e9lan, for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s short documentary series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My First Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014was a finalist for the 1974 National Book Award<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a contributor to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Village Voice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the years that followed, she became a leading writer of the feminist movement while developing a unique style of criticism that blended literary analysis with clear-eyed observations of her own experiences. This style came to fruition in books including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The End of the Novel of Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1997), a groundbreaking collection of essays that debunked the insidious ubiquity of romantic love as a metaphor for happiness, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Men in My Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2008), a compassionate study of the struggle for inner freedom that is shared across genders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2020\/02\/05\/notes-of-a-chronic-rereader\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adapted from her 2020 book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfinished Business: Notes of a Chronic Re-Reader<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was published on our website, as was her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2021\/03\/17\/memoir-of-a-born-polemicist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a Long Look: Essays on Literature, Culture, and Feminism in Our Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 2021 selection of work from throughout her career. And in issue no. 204 (Spring 2013), the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/6202\/letter-from-greenwich-village-vivian-gornick\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letter from Greenwich Village<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Gornick\u2019s essay on her long friendship with a fellow New York City flaneur. It was selected for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best American Essays 2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and became the opening chapter of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Odd Woman and the City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015), a brilliant ode to the place where she has spent her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian Gornick chronicles the vicissitudes of friendship, the accomplishments and still unrealized work of the feminist movement so far, the textured joys, terrors, and longings of living alone,\u201d Mona Simpson, the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>\u2019s publisher, says. \u201cShe writes about getting old. She writes about failure. Had someone described the totality of Gornick\u2019s books to me before I\u2019d read them\u2014a series of essays and memoirs in continuous first-person, without the friction of a second sensibility to come up against, with no threat or hope of a love-story ending\u2014I would guess that I\u2019d have felt claustrophobic, drowned out. But there are I\u2019s and there are I\u2019s. Gornick, like her admired Sebald, pulls off her enormously ambitious interior project\u2014with brash, deep humor, and with a burning interrogation of the many selves she was before this one, here and now, the one talking to us from the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of her illustrious career, Gornick\u2014whose work has also appeared in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Review of Books<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many other publications\u2014has received the Windham-Campbell Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Harvard University Radcliffe Institute Fellowship.
