Here is an incomplete list of books I have started and not finished: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781681376905\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Love<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gwendoline Riley, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9780544359482\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Freddie\u2019s<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Penelope Fitzgerald, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/624639\/the-palace-papers-by-tina-brown\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Palace Papers<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Tina Brown, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/books\/sex-in-the-archives-writing-american-sexual-histories\/9781526124531\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex in the Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Barry Reay, and\u2014many times\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9780142437964\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swann\u2019s Way<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0(the first few pages)<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I abandoned all these books at different points and for the usual reasons; I was busy, bored, or left my copy at the beach. It seems like they are no longer going to be my summer reading\u2014maybe in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014Sophie Haigney, web editor<\/b><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, I returned to one of my favorite explorations of the strange geometries of syntax: \u201cWay down the deserted street, I thought I saw a bus which, with luck, might get me out of this sentence which might go on forever, knotting phrase onto phrase with fire hydrants and parking meters, and still not take me to my language waiting, surely, around some corner.\u201d In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/books\/curves-to-the-apple-the-reproduction-of-profiles-lawn-of-excluded-middle-reluctant-gravities\/9780811216739\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curves to the Apple<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Rosmarie Waldrop&#8217;s sentences accelerate and swerve, reconfiguring the modern discourse on embodiment and subjectivity; there\u2019s a spectacular volta lying in wait in each of these prose poems. \u201cI learned about communication by twisting my legs around yours,\u201d she writes, \u201cas, in spinning a thought, we twist fiber on fiber.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014Oriana Ullman, assistant editor<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/listings\/2022\/becher\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bernd and Hilla Becher photographs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently on view at the Met amazed me. They feature austere, serial portraits of industrial sites in Europe and America\u2014lime kilns, cooling stations, gravel plants\u2014which were already falling into abandonment in the last century. The photographers, who were a married team, called their practice \u201canonymous sculpture,\u201d and the result is a surprising blend of conceptual and haunted that rigorously documents the past and transforms it into something almost tender: a monument of labor lost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014David Wallace, advisory
