Courtesy of Higher Pictures Generation.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After hearing the horrifying news about the attack on Salman Rushdie earlier today, I turned to the first book of his I&#8217;d read\u2014or rather, the book he read, on audiocassette, to my family on long car journeys.<br \/>\n<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\"><\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">&#8220;Just do one thing for me,&#8221; Haroun called to his father. &#8220;Just this one thing. Think of the happiest times you can remember. Think of the view of the Valley of \u039a we saw when we came through the Tunnel of I. Think about your wedding day. Please.&#8221;<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014Emily Stokes, editor<\/b><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mackbooks.co.uk\/products\/scumb-manifesto-br-justine-kurland\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCUMB Manifesto<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the photographer Justine Kurland takes scissors to her personal collection of 150 photo books. Paying homage to feminist collages and Valerie Solanas\u2019s <em>SCUM (Society for Cutting up Men) Manifesto<\/em>, she dismembers and reconfigures photographs by the straight white men who have dominated the photography industry for decades. The result is a radical remaking of classic works that often exposes male photographers\u2019 continuous fetishization of women\u2019s bodies\u2014Alfred Stieglitz\u2019s obsession with Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe&#8217;s hands, or Lee Friedlander\u2019s fixation on nudes. Against colorful backdrops, the disembodied hands and legs are striking and strange, compelling in their own right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014Clarissa Fragoso Pinheiro, intern<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, I fell into a deep trance reading Mieko Kawakami\u2019s newest novel,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781609456993\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All The Lovers in the Night<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, translated from the Japanese by Sam Bett and David Boyd. The novel follows a copy editor plagued by anxieties, who drinks copious amounts of booze to cope. Kawakami creates masterful portraits of figures who isolate themselves from others in order to avoid rejection or uncomfortable conversations. These characters live in their minds but notice everything around them, in sensuous, strange, detailed prose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014Campbell Campbell, intern<br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read two short stories by Mieko Kawakami,\u00a0translated by David Boyd, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2022\/05\/12\/two-in-the-afternoon\/\">here<\/a> on the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily<\/span><i><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I am reading <em>Middlemarch<\/em> for the first time, an experience which I had for some reason assumed would be a difficult slog but has in fact been one of the most pleasant aspects of my summer; no one told me it was a book about the consequences of having crushes. Over Fourth of July weekend, I left my copy outside and a surprise thunderstorm left its pages bloated and warped. I got another, which I lugged around on the subway in my messy tote bag, slowly ruining that one, too. Then, someone gave me miraculous thing: a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Middlemarch-Book-Miss-Brooke-Liddlemarch\/dp\/B08XS264GF\/\">little <em>Middlemarch<\/em>es<\/a>, or Liddlemarches\u2014the novel divided into slim paperbacks book by book. Now I carry my little <em>Middlemarch<\/em>es everywhere and show them off to anyone who will listen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>\u2014Sophie Haigney, web
